Closing one eye and crouching slightly, Laurie aligned the buck's head mounted on the wall behind the check-in desk so that its antlers became the concierge's.

Out on the slopes, Laurie felt as though she was flying, her world reduced to only the soft curves of the snow, the blur of trees, and the endless, cradling bowl of the sky.
But no matter how swift her descent, the huddle of lodges and chalets below seemed to grow no closer. Time moved in all directions. How long had she been there, half-gliding, half-falling, unmoving?

Les Autres had never quite seen snow like it, the concierge said, his concern reaching neither his eyes nor his voice. The whole resort was snowed in and would be for days yet.
And he was sure there was no sign of Laurie at all?
The concierge was afraid not, sir. And there was no chance of sending mountain rescue out. Not in this weather.
Euan only nodded, no concern in his eyes either. Same as always.

When she finally reached the resort, dusk had settled, and the first wisps of snow starting to fall. The lights were on in the lodges, basking everything in a warm, welcoming glow. But there was no sign of movement behind any of them. No guests in the streets and restaurants. No sound but the wind.
Something moved through the veil of dancing snow and gathering dark. Footsteps cushioned in the snowdrifts, its great crown of antlers golden in the hazy light.
Laurie called out, but her voice only came dull and muffled.

I found this disturbing at first. The average worker needing 50 or 60 years of salary to earn as much a CEO. (See link above).
Which CEO is average, though? I draw a distinction between guys (and women) who invent something neat, then risk everything to bring it to market. Steve Jobs of Apple. Bill Gates of Microsoft. Maybe even Elon Musk, of Tesla – although much of his good fortune came from conning the Obama administration into doling out tax rebates for millionaires scooping up his first edition $100,000 Telsa hot rods. That's called “an inflection point”. Once you reach a critical mass of sales, you're home free.
I'm less certain about CEOs who don't invent stuff – who just hype it. Jeff Bezos didn't invent the idea of online shopping and home delivery. That was probably Sears Roebuck. Which went bankrupt because they couldn't figure out how to get it right. And kudos to Bezos for using other people's money to build thousands of warehouses, and serving us up a bunch of faux/imitation crapola from China. Is Jeff a genius? Compared to you and me, for sure! If I had the brains and guts to do that, I surely would have. I just hope I didn't go bankrupt and into oblivion if I got it wrong.
True confession – I've always hated Facebook. Not Mark Zuckerberg personally. Just the idea that a website - invented to keep you connected with friends and family- has become a monster. One of the biggest threats to personal privacy. It sells our “cookies” to the highest bidder. When I research a potential purchase – dog kibble, a car, or some obscure book –for weeks afterwards I will be inundated with alternative products, from obscure companies. Until my car and kibble cookies are eclipsed by my next search for canvas summer shoes. Do I need to remind everyone that Facebook is also a stew of "moderator approved" conspiracy theories and state sponsored trolls?
Google is the real cookie monster. Online search engines aren't the same kind of game changer as fire, the wheel, or atomic fission. But Google is getting its comeuppance. Hemmed in by a gazillion lawsuits for "scraping" intellectual property from other sites, and for manipulating their search results for a kickback. Just wait 'til Artificial Intelligence really gets rolling. Search engines will serve up amalgamated/composite results, instead of linking us to trusted sources. If you ask CHATGPT if the earth is round, it might hedge its bets and tell you there's a 2% chance the world is flat. That, of course, would be based on the millions of results it has seen. How else could AI already conclude that white supremacy, pedophilia, and genocide of Jews are mainstream ideas?
Back to giant CEO pay. I'd have less angst if there were also giant CEO taxes being paid. But no one really knows how much bozos like Bezos pay. Certainly they have enough left over to build 500 foot mega-yatchs. To buy mansions in 7 countries. To keep a small army of guys in Zurich watching over their numbered, tax evading bank accounts.
I should confess that i am NOT a tax accountant. All I know is that there's more than 2,000 pages of IRS regulations - just for me. That's the length if you're an individual filer with a normal W2 wage statement. If you're a billionaire, or a corporation, or a subchapter S partnership, or an entertainer with royalties, or an NBA superstar college dropout with deferred income going decades into the future . . . well, who know how many pages of loopholes are baked into YOUR regulations?
My point is this: the world – well, America at least - would be a lot fairer if we had a straight income tax. Exclude the first $25,000 or $50,000 in income. Then pay something easy to understand on the rest. 17% ? 25%? I've seen both numbers argued. Forget all the deceptive crap. Tank those tax deductions for yachts masquerading as second homes. Drop carry forward interest. Let capital sinking funds sink under the waves. Forget farmland tax credits on land which you had no intention of farming, and never got enough rain to grow squat on anyway.
Pick a number for the income tax rate, and let's go with it. Maybe even two numbers. A normal rate for incomes less than $250,000 a year, and a higher rate for incomes over that. But no BS deductions. Your rate is your rate. Whether you're a stoner, a schoolteacher, or software billionaire with a yacht bigger than the Titanic.
Can we at least discuss this?
I now open the floor for debate: to everyone in this forum claiming to be a tax accountant, a socialist/redistributionist, or a millionaire. Tell me straight up why it's unfair to have simple income taxes? And just forget all the tricky loopholes created by politicians for their rich buddies?
Yes, I'm aware that someone is going to snark that “rich guys” will simply flee to a place with low taxes. Someplace usually run by a nasty dictator. That's their choice. I guess we'll just have to depend on the self evident advantages of democracy, a fair legal system, and human rights to make America's case. After all, people like Elon Musk (from South Africa), Sergei Brin, co-founder of Google (from Russia), and Zoom founder Eric Yuan (China) didn't come to America because they heard about our tax rates, did they?

He walked up to me smiling one afternoon. Looked me up and down disparagingly, and said: “You know, Pop, I bet I could kick your ass if I wanted to.”
I smiled, bemused: the puppy finally challenging the old dog.
“Maybe you could. Let’s hope we never have to find out.”
A faked punch from him, that, of course, I ducked away from in horror. Then I had him in a good neck kick, knuckle-rubbing his head vigorously. Both of us in hysterics as he tried to get away.
Momma walked into the room to see what all the commotion was about. Then: “What the hell is Wrong with you two?!”
Threw up her arms in despair, and walked out again. But she was laughing, too.
Great times! I’ve been a blessed man.
He and his group of friends had a fight club of their own, you know. They’d gather together at someone’s house, put on the gloves, and spar with each other. More than sparring, though. There had to be a winner for each match. Whoever quit first, or judged on points by the rest, after a prescribed number of rounds, if both refused to. Small injuries not uncommon, but none of them minded. They were having a good time. Outsiders to their small group could join in, but by invitation only.
First day of another school year. Senior year. Bud hurrying to his first class, arm full of books.
A new kid who didn’t know him, but who was about to. With a pretty girlfriend walking with him, and a small group of admiring hangers-on.
All of whom he needed to impress. And Bud the inside method of doing so. An intentional hard shoulder bump in passing. Trying to knock the books out of his arm.
Bud: “Watch where you’re goin’, bitch!”
“What did you just say to me?!”
“I said: “Watch where you’re goin’…….bitch.”
“I’ll…….”, and as step up. The second mistake.
The next moment flat on his back, wondering how he’d gotten there, as his friends helped him get up:
“He only hit him once, Mr. OP. Guy’s feet flew out from under ‘im, swear to God.”
The would-be hero shaken, but needing to save face. So the old tried-and-true: “This isn’t over!”
Bud, laughing: “We both know it is.”
We had a tradition, the two of us. We both had always liked to play chess. At that time (pre-Pennywise), I fancied myself quite good.
And each time Bud would come home on leave, the two of us would play a single match, winner-take-all, until the next time.
And it was serious business, each move carefully considered by both of us. Everyone else knew not to interrupt. Some of those matches took a Long time. They were always hard-fought, and they were always close things. We were evenly matched. But I always won.
Until I didn’t. One night: “Check……Mate. Finally got you, Pop.”
“Ya, bullshit!”……….But not bullshit: “Sonofabitch”, I finally admitted in wonder. And reached over to topple my King myself.
I’ll always remember the smile of satisfaction in his face. And I don’t know which of us was more proud; him or me.
It was the last time we’d ever play. I put that set away on a shelf afterward, and let it gather dust. There was no point in playing anymore.
And then, years later, along came Pennywise, who is so amazingly much like him. And she took an interest.
A month after she first touched a piece, she challenged me to a match. That I would realize 5 minutes into the second one that she’d let me have. The brat had just wanted to study how I played. It took her only ten minutes to beat me the second time, and I never won another one.
She soon lost interest, though. I was too easy. And, in her stated opinion, the game itself was. She was tired of winning - against me and everyone else. The brat found it boring, lol.

2023.06.01 13:01 LeKanePetit 3 months of non-stop training on walks, my dog still pulls and it’s becoming very stressful

Hey guys. I have a very beefy boy, he is a 18 month Chow-Chow mixed with a Bulldog. He is a rescue and has come from a loving family with no aggression or negative annotations.
We’ve had him for a few months now, and is a very well behaved dog inside. Outside, he is the most overstimulated dog in existence and is so strong that my arms are in pain every day. We have a professional trainer with us 1 day a week, and we have been doing the classic lead training of stopping/starting, backstepping, calming before walks, always having snacks.
It’s just making such a minimal difference after months of work everyday. Am I expecting too much change in a little time? He is still so overstimulated on walks that getting his attention is impossible. Even with snacks. He is sniffing everything, pulling ahead, and if he see’s another dog he wants nothing more to play (had a few nightmare situations where he has ran off/out of my control to a dog, and although he is not aggressive, other dogs/owners obviously don’t appreciate this!) and it’s exhausting bless him.
I just want to vent really, he is an angel and we love him to pieces, but walks with him are now becoming a source of anxiety and worry and me trying to avoid every distraction possible while maintaining training techniques which again, feels like its barely working. I just want to know if i am expecting far too much out of 3/4 months of daily training. He learnt sit, wait, and paw within a few hours so he is a clever boy but all rules/obedience is dropped the second he is outside.

I haven’t even flirted with anyone for such a long time that I thought this could be fun. I’d have loved to say that the idea of doing this came to me during a dream, but I haven’t dreamt in a long time.
I am a 21 years old male from a big city in Brazil. I am going to university for a social sciences degree, and I have done pretty well so far. Besides all that, I write poetry on the side, and I work for a small online newspaper.
I am fascinated fairly often by many things and I have many hobbies so you won’t be bored. Last month I became fascinated by Spanish modern history after reading Preston’s biography of Francisco Franco and I was reading about the Miracle on the Han River yesterday, while my family gave a lunch party and I had to keep myself entertained while they discussed the tragedy of a heiress’ dog many illnesses, which were mysteriously shared with his owner, and some reforms in the Vatican Bank. But yes, in general, I really enjoy the humanities. I follow politics keenly – in fact, there is some chance I might have some thoughts on your country’s politics – and I’d say I am on the centre-left – pro-choice, in favour of a robust welfare state, LGBTQ+ rights, affirmative action. If you know about Brazilian politics, I voted for Marina and Haddad in 2018 (the voting age here is 16), and Lula last year.
As you can imagine, I also really enjoy reading and writing. Besides poetry, I have often thought about reading a novel, but this seems like too much work – and it seems that it would be arrogant of me to write a novel having lived this little. I really enjoy learning about other languages and cultures and I know a bit of French, German, Spanish, and Russian, besides English and Portuguese. I am into genealogy and I have helped a few friends with it. I also really enjoy TV shows and cinema, and I am easily brought to tears. I cried during the last Minions movie, even if I didn’t want to be there. I love music and my taste in it has been described as “fairly gay”. I’d have loved to be a musician, but I’d have loved to have been many things.
I guess I am pretty introverted, polite, and timid. I am affectionate and I can be really passionate as well. And I am fairly funny, or rather, I have made a few people laugh over the years. I asked a close friend to describe myself, and that is what he said:
I think you’re very communicative. Shrewd, funny, a good companion. Kind of withdrawn but not necessarily shy. You avoid conflict and unnecessary arguments, but love to participate in good conversations. I think you’re very kind too, besides being polite.
As for what I want to do with my life, I am unsure though I am inclined to go into academia. I have been considering applying to a PhD program in the U.S. after finishing my undergrad here in Brazil. My family does want me to go into their business, which is related to politics. I have also considered going into diplomacy.
Who am I looking for? I’d look like someone curious about the world around her, and open-minded.

Once wild and rebellious, Amallia seems to have settled down with her marriage to Lord Lyonel Corbray, content to protect and raise their two sons and little daughter. After the loss of her first child, she is ultimately grateful that her children are safe and healthy.

An excellent warrior - one of the best on the entire Continent - though he takes little pride or comfort in that skill, and rarely ever enters tournaments anymore.

Marq's firstborn son, struggling to live up to the shining example of his sire and eager for his approval. Rupert had already proven himself capable in melees and jousts, and recently he was knighted and bestowed the right to bear the Valyrian sword Iridescence, and take his father's mantle as the famed Iridescent Knight.

Alannys was knighted at her wedding (by her husband, no less), and with Loras by her side she had gone through a multitude of adventures. She holds a resentment for her brother Marq for being respected for his prowess where she needs to hide. However, after her husband's death in the battle of Dragonstone, she had not quite been herself, her strong spirit nearly broken with the love of her life lost forever.

Alerie Waxley née Arryn (54)

Identical twin of Alannys, Alerie is the more delicate of the sisters. Deaf, but sharp of mind, Alerie was able to find her niche, prospering in the shadows and manipulating events of the world without being seen behind the schemes. She is married to Willam Waxley, Keeper of the Gates of the Moon, and cares for their son, whom she considers the perfect little boy, though she worries he will grow apart from her as he grows older. In addition to manipulating the events of the world, she also found herself able to control animals to a certain degree, and works to gain more control of this ability.

Eldest son of Luceon Arryn and his second wife. Functioning alcoholic and once a child soldier, Harold is maybe a little disappointed he didn't die in any war. Married to lady Jowenna Egen, Harold might be starting to find a place for himself in the world with the help of his wife and children.

A knight in service to House Hunter, Alaric had forgone his royal title to marry a girl by the name of Sybell, a commonborn daughter of a merchant, whom he had loved dearly ever since he saved her from some bandits many years ago. My parents got a rescue dog, Bobby, just over two months ago. I live at home with them so I've been here for the whole process. They got him from a rescue centre in Cyprus (where I got my own rescue dog Anela 18mo ago, who also lives here with us).
Bobby has been super reactive since they got him even though he was apparently fine in the shelter.
Useful context: IMO my parents expected far much of him too soon and didn't give him adequate space/time to decompress before introducing him to people, walking him etc — I'm sure that that has contributed to his reactivity and we've had a lot of arguments about it. But I've had to take a step back and let them do things their way or I'll make the situation worse.
Over time some of the issues have calmed down but we're facing two I simply feel out of my depth on:
  1. He goes mad on walks if he can't say hello to other dogs. He will manically bark at them and cry. He'll also pull hard on his lead to get to them. As soon as he's able to interact with them, have a sniff etc he's fine (although sometimes will get upset if you take him away before he's ready!). The only thing we can do if it's not possible for him to say hello to another dog is to physically pick him up and try and calm him down with cuddles 🤷🏼‍♀️ this isn't a massive problem but it's just a little strange and I don't like that he gets so distressed.
  2. The biggest issue — he goes apeshit at some people for no reason. Sometimes when people come over he'll bark manically and lunge at them as soon as they walk in. To be clear, I already feel strongly that he shouldn't be put in this position to start with but there's nothing I can do to stop my parents doing this, and sometimes it can't be avoided for a variety of reasons. At this point I'm just trying to figure out what the exact trigger is. He also goes mad when people go to leave. At first we thought it was the act of people standing up or going through doorways but he is also like it when they've already been standing up for a while (he'll just go mad out of nowhere) and it's not always when they're going through doorways. It's also with a variety of people — he's never been like it with my mum, stepdad or me, but he used to be like it with the 11 year old foster kid who lives with us. He can be like it with both complete strangers and people he already knows. He even does it with people who he'd been cuddling up to on the sofa a few mins before! There's just no rhyme or reason to it that we can figure out.
Any thoughts/advice massively appreciated! I should also add that we've consulted with a behaviourist and I'm also a bit of a nerd about dog behaviour stuff and none of us can figure this out.

16-year-old, blind Pearl is enjoying her second chance in a forever home. She's unrecognizable 1.5 years after adoption🩷
Pearl was found as a stray and was placed in a wonderful shelter (Muttville Senior dog rescue in San Francisco) at the age of 15. They paired me with her and we had a bit of a rough start. She was so scared when she first got to my home that she didn't want anyone to touch her. She was in the corner of my room snapping and chomping at the air in obvious distress because she's totally blind. She would not budge when I put her harness on and took her out to go potty. She would flatten out like a pancake. With a LOT of patience, she began to trust me and started walking on her leash. She loves my other dog, 14-year-old Patrick and began to groom his face and snuggle and play with him. She now loves to be picked up and loves hugs. She has learned to navigate my house and our walking path. I've included a pic of her hugging my mom, a pic of how she looked when I first got her, pics of her at the beach, and some pics of Pearl and Patrick 🌈

I have taken in two frenchies, seeking a little advice.
A bit of background, we have taken in two frenchies from someone we knew. They were medically neglected in previous home due to poor mental health and finances (long story).
They are beautiful 3 year old girls however they were left alone for long periods of time in the previous home and they have gotten used to pooping in the house. This isn’t my first rodeo with doggies, rescues or frenchies however this is proving to be a tough habit to crack with them. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. I am home with them all of the time so it’s only an issue at night despite me setting an alarm to let them out in the night.
The white girl struggles with her allergies and her breathing is terrible. Long walks or anything too excitable are of the question sadly but I’m thinking I could keep her bush in other ways however she has no interest in toys whatsoever. Entertainment is proving difficult. She is also incredibly sicky after eating and drinking. I’m keeping excitement to a minimum after eating however any tips much appreciated.
The black girl is pregnant, unknown until she came, very apparent now. Unsure on exact dates at the moment. This bit I’m worried about, I’ve not reared pups before but will obviously do my research. It’s not something I was expecting. She is a lovely girl however she can be a little snappy with the other girl. This predates her pregnancy. The white girl has a permanently injured eye due to a fight. Now they are wonderful together and I’ve only witnessed a little tiff between them when leads were going on but by her behaviour you can see she has been smacked and bullied by the male dog she previously lived with. I would hate to separate them but ultimately their well-being comes first. I have noticed the triggers and separate them during those activities now however one the one occasion they did fight breaking them up was an issue, any tips on how to without damage?
Definitely bitten off more than I can chew as these will be the most problematic but lovely girls I’ve taken in but in their condition if they had been taken away by animal welfare I can’t help but think they would have been put down.

Jacob sat on my couch, speaking on his phone to his parents. Lightyears separated them, but the communications had gotten to the point that they were finally able to talk with instant transmission.
“And you think they will approve?” He asked on the phone. I couldn’t hear, even with a Venlil’s superior hearing, but I could tell by his expression that whatever was being said was good! “So there’s a chance? That’s awesome! Then ah wish y’all luck!”
His cheeks rise once more in his toothless grin as he listens. I set the rest of the stringfruit I had been eating onto the table, feeling that their conversation was wrapping up. I really hoped to talk to him as well. “Love y’all too! Ah guess ah’ll let all’a y’all go. Hmm?” He hummed joyfully, “Thank y’all so much. Ah’m always a call away! Any time y’all want! Love ya!… bye!”
I let my tail wag as he hung up his phone and placed it on the table. “So what is the verdict?”
“Their prospects are looking good,” he replied, “lot of people have been signing up to sponsor a refugee. Their ranch could accommodate some workers for the goats and orchard. And they could even give them proper pay!”
“Impressive. Are your parents that wealthy?”
He wiggled his hand to signal the ‘kinda’ sign. “They got lucky with some investments. They’re country folk at heart, so they put a good amount into peach groves and expandin’ the property for the goats.”
That last word caught my attention. It was translated as a form of cattle. Cattle that they currently had. Steady, Tarlim. You don’t know what it truly means yet. I wasn’t about to let an unspoken fear fester in my mind. I had to know. “Goats? What are… goats?”
Jacob froze a bit. He had been swinging his braces ankle up to rest on my table, so it was obvious how it hung in the air. “Crap. Okay! Look, this is a long explanation, and it goes into our ability to eat meat.” He set his leg on the table, turning his head so that he looked at me with both eyes. “We ain’t supposed to talk much ‘bout that stuff, but if ya really want to know, ah will tell ya.”
I did want to know. Jacob had done so much for me. He talked to me in the program. Greeted me with open arms. Built me up when the world felt like it was going to tear me down.
I didn’t want him to think I would fear him for the actions of his people. Never.
“Please,” I say, “Explain all that you can. I will listen.”
He patted his hand against his knee and grinned at me. “Kay! Kay… where should ah start…”
A moment of silence passed as he thought. I do hope he isn’t overthinking.
Thankfully, my fears appeared unfounded as he spoke again. “Ah ain’t an expert in this, but ah know a bit. The goat is a four-legged animal that ah believe originally lived in hilly or mountainous areas on earth. Think… well, remember that Putyl plush? How its body looked?”
“Yeah,” I replied, “go on?”
“Okay, imagine that body but with a head shaped similar to a Venlil but with a nose on it. That would be the average goat.”
I blinked in surprise at the mental image. “So we Venlil look like one of your cattle?”
“Slightly,” he admitted, “but ah can’t really call it an exact likeness. Kinda like how the Krakotl look kinda like those blue birds y’all have round here.”
I nodded. A human gesture I had come to include in with my ear gestures.
“Well, on average, their shoulders come up to our waist, though there are some breeds that who could stand as tall as us.” He chuckled to himself, and I also whistled in amusement at the thought. Those would be some big animals. “Anyway, you know how humans keep animals around us, right?”
I flicked my ears in the affirmative. “Your dogs, cats, and that stuff.”
“Yeah, well, while dogs were the first animals we humans kept around as our companions, goats and a similar species called sheep were the very first animals we specifically bred to feel safe around us.” He held up his hand in a calming gesture, “note that this took a long time. Goats and sheep have been domesticated- a word that means bred for human use- for something over 10,000 years. Our bond with those animals is practically on an instinctual level.”
It was astonishing. Ten. Thousand. Years. How does one even begin to conceive such a history? Even the founding of the Federation seemed ancient to many.
“Way-ell, that may be an exaggeration,” he corrected himself, “Maybe not quite instinct. Ah, for one, whenever ah see a baby goat, ah just think ‘protect. Feed baby. Keep safe. Raise healthy and strong!’ They are great animals. Can be stubborn and absolute crybabies, but still great animals.”
He leaned back on the couch and glanced up at me. “Any questions so far?”
“Nothing… too major,” I admit. “Mainly the usual about what they were… used for.”
“Yeah, ya know one of ‘em already.”
I keep my expression neutral. “Meat.” We sat in silence for a bit as I watched him nod. “It’s… with all you’ve done for me, it’s sometimes hard to remember that you’re predators.”
He nodded. “Ah won’t get into anything bout morality ‘n all that. Survival and time don’t really care about that. But ah can sum up the basic stance humans have had about how we treat our animals.” He sat straight and moved his hand up and down to emphasize his words. “A farmer should keep their animals Happy, Healthy, and Respected. Whenever one of those things were forgotten, people would get upset and move to try and make things better. Ah won’t lie and say it always worked, but ah can say somebody was always tryin’ to make sure the animals were treated well.”
I absorbed the information he told me. “But why? I know that you aren’t like the Arxur, so…” I sigh, “why do you treat your… cattle… so well?”
“Again, ah won’t go into the morality and all that,” he explained, “ah ain’t qualified to talk ‘bout that. But there is a practical reason as well.” He cleared his throat, “a happy, healthy, and respected animal can do and give more than an animal that isn’t. Being good to them results in more good coming back to us. Simple as that.”
Part of me wanted to find a flaw in that logic. The part that still grasped to what I had been taught all my life. But… but those teachings said I myself was dangerous. That caused the facilities to be built.
By the tenants, the humans treat the animals they eat better than we treat other people.
“As for goats in moder times,” Jacob continued, ignorant of the thoughts going through my mind, “eh, modern times, we have other uses fer ‘em that isn’t meat. Mah parents got a few kinds’a goats, an’ somma them are fer grass care.”
My train of thought stalls in confusion at his words. “I’m sorry, grass care?”
“Yeah!” He laughed, “see, goats will eat grass and shrubs, and their poop acts like a natural fertilizer. The goats can be rented out to people for their lawns, though they usually get rented by farmers so they can graze in their fields before planting their next crops so there’s less weeds and the area’s fertilized.”
I needed a moment to process that. One of the things they do to help…is eat food and defecate? That’s it? “So…one of their jobs is literally just eating and pooping? And people are willing to pay for that? Why not just buy fertilizer? Wouldn’t that be easier?”
“Sometimes, but not as good fer the environment.” He shrugged, “besides, fertilizers don’t get rid of the weeds as well. So when given the choice between paying for a plane or people to come out and spray the fertilizer and weed killers or pay us for our goats to do the same thing naturally, a good number will rent the goats.”
It was strange logic that only worked in the context of cattle, but I couldn’t find any flaws in his reasoning. “And if a goat eats the wrong thing? Are they…y’know…” I couldn’t find it in myself to continue the morbid question. What other use would defective cattle have other than being slaughtered?
“Then it’s the farmers fault fer letting them in the crop field.”
I blink. “Wrong field?”
“Yeah. The farming fields are in sections, and are frankly massive, so it’s usually easy to keep them in the correct area for grazing.” He was so calm when he said that. Maybe he didn’t understand my question.
“Well, what if one isn’t easy? What if it… attacks someone or… or just refuses to obey?”
He shrugged. “Then it’s just a goat being a goat. Like ah said, they can be stubborn. Will even headbutt ya. Just gotta work around them.”
Work around… “They attack you and you… do nothing?”
He shrugged again. “Yeah, pretty much. It’s usually nothing major. They’re usually pretty friendly most of the time.”
I couldn’t wrap my head around this. They kept cattle…but treated them well and allowed themselves to be abused by them? Where’s the sadism? The cruelty? The…the…
My line of thought trailed off as I realized in horror what I was doing. In some small way, I was equating Jacob to the Arxur. My friend to those monsters. I…was I really still that far gone? I noticed Jacob stepping in front of me, waving his arm rhythmically. “Hello, Venlil Prime to Tarlim! You okay? You, uh, started lookin’ two ways there for a bit.”
“S-sorry,” I stuttered. “I just, I…”
“Look, ah can stop if it’s getting too much. Ah know that-”
“No!” I shouted, “it- it’s not that! I- I just realized that I… I was still thinking of you as like those… like the Grays.” I take a deep breath to calm myself. Jacob is silent as he recognizes that I have more to say. “I don’t… I don’t want to think of you like them. L-like the Federation says you are.”
He reaches over and gives my back a comforting scratch. “You’ve been taught that stuff all yer life. Ah ain’t gonna blame ya for taking time to adjust to new stuff.” We fell silent as I controlled my breathing. Focus. Breathe. Calm… His grin had become a comforting sight since I had first met him. He shifted back in his seat. “We can still talk about something else, if ya want.”
“Thank you, but…” I let out my breath, preparing myself. “I still want to know more. About… Y’all, and your goats. You said that… y’all used them in other ways, right?”
He seemed comforted by my imitation of his words. He picked up his phone and clicked it once. “This next one will likely need a bit of a visual explanation. Thankfully, ah was able to get this past as a personal memory.”
I cocked my head in curiosity. “What is it?”
He pointed the screen towards me. “Mah first time milking a goat with the milking machine!”
The what.
10 Minutes Later
I didn’t even realize it was possible for my soul to be dirty. Can I clean it, or will it be that dirty forever? By the Tenants, what would Sharnet think?
… could those suckers work on her- NO! BAD BRAIN!
“And do the Goats feel… do they feel pain?”
Jacob shrugged. “Yeah, it’s why they walk right up to the milking machines. Having swollen udders can be painful fer them.”
“No, no.” Shuck Shuck Shu-- STOP IT!! “aHEM. Does the machine hurt them?”
He shook his head. “Not at all. The suction is gentle enough that it is just like one of their own kids suckling.”
White liquid flowing through tubes into a container. The machine being set on- CEASE! “And you… Use this milk?”
“As food, is the shortest answer. Animal milk is extremely nutrient dense so it was essential to our survival in northern climates in early history. Nowadays, goat’s milk is mostly processed for Cheese and Yogurt, both of which are eaten for health and for pleasure.”
They can do that? “You are… you are able to eat another animal’s milk? Not just your own?”
“Yeah! Well, Not all of us! This is actually really interesting:” Jacob sat on the edge of his seat and met my eye, an excited gleam behind it, “So humans who raised goats lived in these mostly hilly areas that got cold. Not many things we could eat would grow there, but plenty that the goats could eat. Now, this is slightly related to our ability to eat meat, so you ready?”
Anything to get my mind off Sharnet in- “Yes, I’m ready.”
He clapped his hands together. “Okay! So, because not as much would grow, there would be times when people didn’t have much food, so they’d go hungry.”
And so they ate the goat.
“Now you’re probably thinking we ate it, but no!” My ears flicked up in surprise as he continued. “See, a goat as a meal would only last so long, but a goat that was lactating would feed the family for much longer, as well as give nutrients that the humans weren’t getting otherwise! So, with time, it became an evolutionary advantage for humans to be able to drink milk into adulthood!”
I gave my head a quizzical tilt, “but didn’t you say not all humans could?”
“Right! Because the animals that gave us milk weren’t everywhere! Humans in places with more sun and fields didn’t need as much milk, so they never developed the ability; milk tolerance was probably our most recent evolutionary trait! So, yeah! Keeping goats around literally caused us to evolve.”
So much history. Animals that literally changed how they evolved. “And… and these are the animals some Gojid refugees would work with?”
“Yep!” He leaned back in his seat, confident in his words. “Milking, cleaning, moving, all that stuff.”
I wag my tail. “I hope that they come to realize how great an honor they would be being given.”
Jacob let out a content sigh. “Fer those that stay, ah hope so too.”

I know this is a spider appreciation thread, however I'm moving to French's Forest and I have a small dog and child and I want to ensure there are none of these beautiful little creatures in my back yard. I can observe them in bushland nearby when I need to. Do yearly sprays work against funnel webs. What other measures can I do to keep these delightful beautiful creatures out my garden please

It just happened ten minutes prior as I am writing this. I am still shaking and trying to process things.
I (18f) am a huge animal lover. Sure, I have lots of respect for many more hostile ones. Even dogs. I own a small beagle dame, who I adore with all my heart. We always thought my father was allergic but as it turned out, he actually wasn't. As soon as we figured this out we got my beautiful little lady 10 years ago.
Right now, I have finals and my school has the regulation that we don't have to go to school unless it is for the classes we need. I have only one left and thus I am majorly at home. This leads to me taking my doggie on walks. I love doing it but I have issues with my knees. So, we usually minimalize our walk to around an hour. Today, we walked only 20 minutes. Behind our village is a little field way we usually take. It's my favorite route. The path leads along a few gardens behind our neighborhood. I knew people would be working on some projects as the sun is shining and it is a wonderful day.
What I didn't know was that the owners of this new dog in our neighborhood would leave their damned door wide open whilst working in the garden. I didn't even see the dog. Only the mother of the guy who owns this one. But I did see a movement behind her. All my muscles came to a stop. I just froze and who would have thought- the big, chunky guard dog stood there and stared at me. Now, I wasn't prejudiced about him. But I knew he had already bitten other dogs and humans. So, yeah. There I was with my two useless knees and one even more useless little dog.
And there the other one was- now running towards us with his teeth bared. The woman did try to recall him but oh boy, he did not want to listen at all.
I waged two options. Let my dog free and fight this one off until she was gone or snatch her up and make a run for it. I know, it's foolish to run due to the trigger it could hold for the other dog to actually hunt us. But I wasn't going into a brawl with that thing. My dog has top priority and I did not want to loose her just because someone doesn't have their dog under control.
So, I snatched her up and sprinted. I didn't look back. No. I could feel my knees rattling out of place and jumping back and forth. But I didn't care. I. didn't. care. Nor did I stop. The people in our village only looked at us weirdly but were they hunted by one big doggo? No. But I was. Or at least I thought. He only followed us to the entrance of our village.
I basically ran our door open, shut it and sealed us off in our house until I was 100% sure no dog would sit in our yard to finish what he begun.
I really despise his owner, too. He got the dog and you know training a dog? No. He doesn't need that. I hate it. Him and his forsaken morals. My knees are in pain and I was once again pursued by a bigger dog whilst taking out my own. It has happened before and gods, I hate it. If you must get a dog, then train him!! My god, how hard could that be? I hate it. I hate that they live two houses away from me and I now have to look at this dog every day when I walk past him.
Now, before someone comes at me: The reason why I write is to remind people to properly train their dogs if they decide to let them free roam. The elder had no control over him and I didn't want to risk to see what would happen. Again, I am aware running away wasn't the best option but I panicked. And, one more thing, I do not want to say every big dog has to be hostile. It's the way they are trained and this one wasn't. Yet he wore neither a collar nor a lengthy leash. All he had were huge teeth and a not so friendly body language as he came surging after us.
Writing this down made me feel a little better and back to reality, really. I am just glad my little lady lays at my feet right now, snoring off everything that has happened.

Grimes: writer, producer, fighter. When Grimes speaks, the internet listens. She’s got strong opinions about #FreeKesha and Donald Trump, but she’s reluctant to be music’s moral compass.
Claire Boucher – aka Grimes – is telling me about the time she got arrested for assault. ‘This guy at my school grabbed my butt, so I hit him in the face,’ she explains gleefully. ‘He was a huge pussy because it was hardly a slap. Other girls were like, “He grabbed my butt too”, so he dropped the charges. That’s when I went from being unpopular to at least acceptable at high school.’ In a world of manufactured personas and publicist-run Twitter accounts, 27-year-old Boucher is one of the most honest voices out there – and she’s created a cult fanbase as a result. She’s currently touring with her fifth studio album ‘Art Angels’, one of the best albums of 2015: a record that sounds like it was made 500 years into a post-apocalyptic future. She wrote, produced and performed every track on it.While her music is dreamy and ethereal, Boucher is the opposite. The Canadian gives opinions so sharp they’re basically clickbait headlines. She’s clued up on gender identity, the environment and the injustices of the music industry, and she’s not afraid to speak her mind. In the past, Boucher has been described as a ‘pop star’ and a ‘feminist spokesperson’, but over the course of our conversation she dismisses both those labels. While her music is popular, she says her sound’s still alternative. She’s been praised for criticising misogyny in the music industry, but she’s bored of talking about sexism. She’d much rather just hit you in the face with her music.
You’re performing at Brixton Academy on March 10. What can fans expect from your gig? ‘The whole tour can fit into a single duffel bag. It’s based on a video game, “Metal Gear”, which is anti-military, so it’s all black-and-white army mesh with red spray paint all over it.’
How did you imagine London before you visited? ‘I thought it was going to be way more savage, like the Industrial Revolution: people eating bread with rotten teeth.’
Did you get your name from the music genre? ‘Accidentally. I thought it was just a cool option on MySpace: “Ooh, grime, what a cool word.” I was like, “Oh, it must mean music that’s kind of dark.”
’Are you a fan of grime now? ‘I’m actually trying to learn about grime music right now. My favourite artist is JME. He’s amazing and he’s a vegan. He produces all his stuff, makes all his videos too. I really vibe off the self-auteur thing and think it’s really cool when artists are political. I’m always getting in trouble for being political so it makes me feel less alone.’
You’ve made an effort to credit yourself as ‘writer, singer, producer, video director’ at the end of your videos. What’s the reaction to that been like?
‘People still ask me all the time who produces my stuff and who directs my videos. I also get people accusing me of showing off, like I’ve been insane for asking for a credit. I even know people who were going around saying “I was working on the Grimes record.” No you didn’t. It’s a blatant lie.’
You also drew illustrations to go with every track on ‘Art Angels’. What’s the last thing you drew? ‘Oh my God… a weird dog with a penis. I was at a restaurant and I was leaving a creepy thing for the waiter. I wanted them to come after we left and be confused.’
In 2013 you wrote a blog post calling out all the sexism you’d experienced in the music industry. Have men in the industry changed the way they behave around you since then? ‘It’s been a fucking nightmare. People treat you like you’re hysterical. And I spend half my interviews getting asked about feminism. I almost wish I hadn’t written it.’
But at the same time, hasn’t it had a positive impact? More women in the music industry are now speaking out about sexism and sexual assault… ‘Yes, but it’s also the most small-fry shit. It’s so much worse on the upper levels, and those people are never going to get called out. Even I wouldn’t do it because you don’t want to get too fucked. So you end up with these super-low-level scapegoats for what’s happening.’
Your sound is futuristic. What do you think about the nostalgia for ’90s and noughties music right now? ‘It’s an economic thing. I think people are open to more sounds, but the only way to make money from music now is to be a good live act. That’s kind of whittled out anyone who’s not making music that can be transformed into a live setting. When I started, electronic acts were getting on to festival line-ups then all of us were bombing. A rock band is a much easier format for a live setting.’
You’ve said in the past that fame makes you anxious. Do you feel like you’ve had to sacrifice a lot to make money as a musician? ‘No, because of the alternative: maybe I’d be less anxious about some things, but then I’d be a barista at Starbucks and be anxious about my taxes. The level of anxiety is probably equal to what it would be otherwise.’
Do you think pop music’s becoming more inclusive? ‘I think it’s becoming a lot more exclusive. Music is basically for rich people. Studios are really expensive, so you either have to be wealthy or pretty enough or know the right person to get in there. The only reason I had the chance to make “Art Angels” is because I made money off my last album “Visions” and could build my own studio.’
Do you find it frustrating when you see less talented people succeeding and then more talented people unable to get into the industry? ‘It really pisses me off. Especially when they’re like “It’s my new track!” and you’re like “It’s not your new track, it’s literally got seven co-writers.” And then there’s this person over here, who’s worked their ass off, is extremely talented and maybe they don’t look like a supermodel.’
A good example from last year is the Justin Bieber album that had so many writers and producers on it. ‘My best friend [BloodPop] wrote the track “Sorry”, so I have to defend it; I’m very glad that he got that. I think those things should be allowed to exist, but there aren’t really avenues for other things. I think that when I came up in music it was a lot easier. If you got written about on Pitchfork, you could almost tour. Now I feel like there are almost no avenues for any kind of new alternative music. The labels are disappearing, the blogs are disappearing, it’s becoming more homogenised. I think it’s really hard for new artists right now, especially if you don’t want to compromise. If you don’t want to sign a six-album deal for no money.’
Kesha’s locked into a contract that means she can only record with Dr Luke (who, she claims, sexually assaulted her – which he strenuously denies). What do you think of that situation? ‘You shouldn’t be allowed to sign a human being, regardless of what the allegations are or what anyone said or did. It’s basically like slavery. She should be allowed to record [with other people]. It’s a deeply fucked situation.’
Who do you think is the best pop star of all time? ‘Beyoncé – because she’s the best performer and her music is really, really varied. The way her self-titled album got people to listen to a pop album as an entire record is a really difficult thing to do. It was as creative and as experimental as it was pop. I put Madonna up there too.’
You were compared to Madonna recently in a German magazine… ‘Yes. It’s weird as I’m not very good at dancing or singing, but it’s a compliment. I think it’s undeserved. Maybe I’m dissociated from who I am, but I just don’t seem very much like a pop star. My music’s still pretty alternative. I’m on an indie label.
’You recorded ‘Visions’ while on an amphetamine binge, but you recently changed your stance on drugs. Is that because you want to be more of a role model or because you had a horrific trip? ‘I’ve lost four very close friends to drugs over the last few years, which has been really shitty. But it’s also because I used to get 14-year-olds coming to my shows saying things like “Do you need drugs to make art?” That’s hard, especially when you’ve lost friends. Drugs aren’t necessary for art. They can be a good time. A lot of my friends do drugs, but it’s not something I feel I can publicly condone – and, mostly, I want to try and live a cleanish lifestyle.
’What’s the worst party you’ve ever been to? ‘Jeez, I’ve been to some bad parties. Once I was at a party where everyone got maced and it was terrible. I was outside with some other people and we were like “Hey, there are some big, scary neo-Nazi-looking guys at the door!” And then all of a sudden people started screaming and they were robbing the house. It was pretty back.
’You posted on Instagram about being a Bernie Sanders fan. What would you do if Donald Trump used your music like he’s been using Adele’s? ‘I’d sue him. The band Skinny Puppy tried suing the US government for $666,000 for using their music as torture [at Guantanamo Bay].’
What would you do with the money you got? ‘Give it to Planned Parenthood.’

Chapter 19 - Gramgrim
With the trials finally over, the party safely left the accursed valley. As Keyaruga and his girls did so, the white mist once again filled the mountain ridge, yet this time; it felt much less thick, potent, not so horrifying to look at.
“All things considered, I think we’ve done a pretty good job.” Freia spoke, looking back at the foggy veil. Barely anyone else would notice this, but it was damaged, breached, severely weakened. No doubt, it would take months, if not years, to completely restore the pocket dimension. Right?
“Ghh, yeah, right! I… OH FUCK!!!” Ellen snarled, once again tripping over herself. “Fucking pigeon! Fucking body! Fucking fog! Fucking birdies! Fucking! Fucking! Fucking! FUCK!!!” And just like that, she landed… in Setsuna’s arms.
“Watch where you’re going.” The she-wolf looked as phlegmatic as ever, but it was clear, that her patience was slowly coming to an end.
“I’m trying, okay! I’m trying… Haa…” The apostle of Caladrius growled in painful frustration. Right now, she was at least six times as strong as she was before passing those near-impassable trials, and that left her senses in a state of complete disarray. How can you walk, when instead of just slightly moving your leg it twitches forward so hard, it almost rips your tendons? How can one do something with their hands, when their arms are frantically shaking from the sheer amount of force in their thin, underdeveloped muscles? Leveling was supposed to be a gradual process, so that a person could get used to their new physical abilities. Only heroes could instinctively jump through dozens of levels without any discomfort involved. But that’s the thing – Ellen wasn’t made one of those. “Damn, I should’ve just waited somewhere in a salty house. Maybe, I wouldn’t be cursed then.” The princess complained, sitting right besides Patty. The raptor seemed more than disinterested in her cathartic shock, and for that, the fallen warlady was more than grateful, really.
“I think we should be happy, that everyone is intact.” Eve said calmly, looking at everyone around. The shock from facing her past had already passed, but she now couldn’t help but stare at Keyaruga. Even now, he was at least one head taller, and yet…
I’m but a healer… Don’t worry. We’ll start all over…
She remembered her past, her two children, her… abusive husband, a crumbling state with nonexistent governmental structure, the sheer brutality with which Jioral razed her domain. Eve Reese saw all of that… and after her time with Keyaruga, that felt like a nightmare, which ended after waking up in this new world. Not something to fixate on, but to learn from and move on.
“Come on.” Right now, the lady in red looked at Setsuna, who extended her arm to Ellen. The latter struggled with her power, her normal ways of doing practically anything now contradicted everything she was and would be – her new body was blessed like no other person could even dream of. And yet, it was a change – a rapid, unwanted metamorphosis, forced by an outer force. Eve could really sympathize with that. Still, there was one more notion to take into account. “You’ll get used to it.” Such were the words of Setsuna, who, despite the princess’ brattiness, her emotional instability, dictated by her lack of a true purpose, still decided to sit near her. “I will teach you, how to…”
And so, a new chapter of their life started. A page of learning, overcoming… accepting. While Freia began to dig into her fancy pocket dimension, returning most of the stuff the party would much rather have ready at hand, and not in some cold void, the Hero of Healing just stood near the future queen, struggling with emotions he had forbade himself from feeling, but ended up wrapped up in them nonetheless.
“Thank you, Keyaruga.” Eve spoke softly; she felt it was the best moment to speak with him. And, as if to prove it, the lad smiled slightly with his lips. “Without you, I’d never have reunited with Caladrius.”
“Well, thank you for not killing us, Me-ua.” The man responded, checking on his saber. There was no trace of black blood on it, but the small dents, the parts he dulled when cutting bones and chopping meat were still there. He now just mindlessly walked back and forth. “You didn’t need me to succeed in the first place. We merely gave you a ride.” The hero added, grabbing a whetstone from Kelly’s saddlebag. He, like many others, needed a breather, something to occupy his hands in this time of relative calm.
“You’re much too humble, when you don’t need to be.” Eve analyzed while sitting next to the healer. Almost everyone had something to do now: Keyaruga sharpened his weapon, Freia munched an apple, and Setsuna helped Ellen to learn walking again. The potential Lady of the South, in turn, had nothing to pass the time with. “I want to repay you for what you’ve done for me, Keyaruga. So how about you tell me what you really, really want?” The dame in red asked, trying not to interrupt the man’s little indulgence. He found some form of peace in scratching his saber against a green rock, enjoyed wiping out the metallic dust, and liked the feeling of thin sharpness when he tested it with his finger. Only when the reddish blade was properly reformed to a serviceable condition, did the landless knight actually turn toward his pretty suzerain.
“Well, for starters, I’d like to pick out some pretty shoes for your little feet.” Keyaruga said somewhat dismissively. After all, those old worn down footwear that the girl owned before, had been forever destroyed by Caladrius. “Oh, and underwear. I suppose you don’t wear it now, do you?”
“Actually, I really don’t.” Eve replied, trying to keep up with the casual talk the hero had dictated with his seemingly relaxed voice. “A shame, really. But actually, I like this dress. It’s light, easy to get in and out of, it doesn’t get dirty, and it doesn’t allow me to get dirty. See?” The white-haired woman demonstrated her feet to him – even though she was walking on the ground bare-footed, there wasn’t even a single trace of mud on her pretty toes.
“How cute. Although, I’d much rather like to see you without this gloomy rag.” Keyaruga chuckled, wiping his weapon against his own trousers before returning the weapon to its dark-blue sheath. “Maybe, I’d even play with your new horns. I suppose holding you from behind would be much fancier this way.”
“Is that your wish?” Eve playfully wondered, rising on her feet along with the man. “I was being serious, Keyaruga. You were the one who helped me to understand what I am, and what I’m supposed to do and feel. So, like it or not, you’re not leaving unrewarded.” The woman said in a gentle, yet somehow shrewd manner. She grew up, not only physically – but also her tone, intonations, walking, gestures – all of that radiated enticing maturity. Still, when the red-haired lad looked at his companion, he didn’t feel arousal. He…
“Maybe… I simply want to be accepted. Just the way I am…” The man mumbled, almost whispering, in fact. Did Anna truly forgive him? Or did she just snap after witnessing, how little human life meant for her foster son? One would easily go mad after seeing something like their child surviving a decapitation. “Ah, forget it!” He ultimately shrugged it off, once again hiding inside an armor of feigned apathy.
“F-forget? But I…” That glimpse of Keyaruga’s true, softer nature didn’t escape Eve’s perception, of course. But even so, this prying attempt would be quickly shut down by…
“I just want to fuck you in this new body.” …this. The healer outright demanded another session of sex. He even grabbed his cute suzerain from around her back, pulling her closer to him.
“Oh… You just can’t stop being a pervert, can you?” The woman sulked, once again revealing that touchy, puffy child. Now, that she grew up, it looked both hilarious and cute at the same time. “Each time I start to like you, you’re pulling something like that…” Eve complained, remembering how she was about to be pushed away from the saddle, just in case Ellen was to be impaled right on the road.
“So you don’t like me now?” The man sneered, as his left arm moved lower and lower, up until it slipped underneath the dark dress she wore, and his hand grabbed the black-winged prodigy’s butt cheek “What? You think I didn’t notice why you wished to get older? That thick ass of yours!” The healed malevolently whispered, giving the kokuyoku scion an assertive kiss to her puffy lips. “So, will you have some fun with me?”
“I… Ugh! Damn! You!.. How can you be such a jerk, Keyaruga?!” And just like that, the lady in red pushed the hero away. It seemed like he had overstepped his boundaries, thus scaring Eve away. Well, relatively. She just moved a few steps away from the healer, before the girl stopped, turned back, and revealed her pretty face overtaken by a bright scarlet blush. “Ehm… Could you give me some time? Till the evening, maybe?”
“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-hah! Oh, birdie! Who do you think I am?” Keyaruga mocked, catching himself on his own hypocrisy in the process. After all…
That’s a good question. Who am I, exactly?
“He-heh… Oh, you’re a kind boy, to me, to us… But your character is bad! You’re a cheater, a womanizer, who doesn’t even think cheating is something bad, an immoral pervert, a butcher… But, I still love you, for who you really are.” The queen-to-be spoke with a soft smile, which illuminated her man. A truly beautiful visage…
“You know, I want to draw your portrait now.” …deserving to be preserved for ages to come.
“Just… don’t paint me naked, alright?” The Me-ua kahul spoke with a little bit of embarrassment.
“However you wish, my queen.” Keyaruga said, dramatically taking Eve’s hand for a reverent kiss. That sure did embarrass the woman, but this time she took it with a graceful smile on her red face. “Well then, I think we should return to your grandpa, and…”
“N-no!..” Of course! How could it be any different? Basically everyone in the group thought this day wouldn’t bring anymore tragedies, when the kokuyoku scion suddenly and severely slouched, as if someone punched her in the guts.
“Eve?! What’s wrong, Eve?!” Keyaruga asked, as his mood instantly changed from arousal to the deepest concern. “Did Caladrius do something to-?”
“Tamsha! (the souls)” The lady replied, quickly jumping back on her feet. “Haa!.. Haa!.. N-no! Not now! NOT AGAIN!!! One, two, f-fo… Many!.. So many dying now! W-why?!” And just like that, the woman started running back and forth, trying to make sense of the gruesome tragedy that she was only now capable of realizing was happening, trying to suppress tears of sadness, panic, and rage. She thought she was ready for something like this, that the second loss of her parents and remembering the first world tempered the woman just enough to be strong in the face of cruelty; apparently, not.
“I see…” At the same time, Keyaruga remained stalwart as ever. He had to; the hero had the role of an unflappable leader, a function much more precious, than any other personality. Eve could store the souls of the kokuyoku kin right inside her wings, provided they refused to leave this world in favor of helping their princess.
“Girls! We’ve got a problem here!” Keyaruga yelled, getting the attention of his three other companions as he ran over to them.
I knew it! I knew that’d happen! Stuff like this always happens with everyone around me! Brin! Mayala! Mil!
“What happened, Keyaruga?” Freia asked, running next to Ellen and Setsuna. “A-a… Evy?” And just as she looked at the groveling girl, the magician lurched forward to help her.
“Oh, let me guess, Visou is under attack?” The Apostle of Caladrius asked, moving more like a ragdoll than a normal human being. The twitching muscles, the pain in her joints, desperately trying to adapt to this new form of power – all of that stole whatever grace the younger princess had.
“Freia, your magic. Send us to Visou.” Setsuna demanded, remaining the only reasonably calm person among the group. The demi-human girl shook the heroine’s shoulder… But no.
“I’m sorry… I can’t… Living can’t survive there…” The caster responded grievously, her pocket dimension was not meant as a means for traveling, much less an inhabitable place for a living, breathing being.
“It’s two days, if we ride on raptors. Not an option.” Keyaruga deadpanned, holding the queen-to-be together with Freia.
“I need to do something…” Still, the lady in red had some fight in her yet. She stood tall, and… “I’ll call Caladrius… That’s only one use, and Ellen got us two…”
“That’s…” For a second, the apostle of the aforementioned god thought about how she should dissuade the girl from spending that chance, that it was much better to murder a few thousand of her enemies than to save a few of her subjects. But… “Do it! Hate to say it, but we really need that pigeon!” … she still had some empathy in her, at the end of the day.
“Yes… No point in coming here otherwise…” And just like that, Eve Reese completely straightened her spine and walked a few steps away from the rest of her companions, when Keyaruga stopped the girls from following the kokuyoku scion. “Haa… Alright… Faruki koliabe shia tayi marunga! (By the power of the ancient pact!) Kalza ton salmukar wor habar ul-molla, mera tamsha pora harino, Caladrius! (O you, who carries wind and death, my soulmate, Caladrius) Oma, kuta de anwari! (Come before me, now!)”

The words were spoken, the seal was marked. As Eve chanted what Ellen really wanted to say was ‘This is just a means to appease that pigeon’s overly bloated ego’, a massive illustrious circle appeared underneath her, as the woman levitated above the ground. A massive flux of mana broke out of it, overwhelming everyone, who could sense its presence, even the apostle of what was to come… Especially her, as she was unused to magic coursing through her veins.
Soon, the circle flew into the sky. It stopped at around twenty meters from the ground, and then, the breach between the words was opened. The massive white bird emerged from the rift, still carrying her accessories of gold and purple.
“It seems like our meeting had happened earlier than either of us expected.” The harbinger of plague mused, once again looming above the party. “How do you like my grace, Apostle?”
“It’s shit and I want nothing of it!” Ellen replied, accompanying her rant with a proudly upraised middle finger. “Now do your only job and help those magpies, anima-!”
“Shut up!” Eve yawped, forcefully closing Keyaruga’s ‘sister’s’ mouth. “Please, we must reach Visou, before it’s too late!”
“Your temper never fails to amuse me, little one.” Still looking at her unwilling champion, Caladrius nodded. For some reason, looking at Ellen’s emotional tantrums reminded the creature of her own young days, the first millennia of a carefree existence. Alas, that didn’t hold too much importance right now. What did, though, was that everyone felt being pulled up from the ground. Everyone, including the raptors. Soon, they found themselves closed in a shining white sphere, presumably enclosed and protected from the entire world. The reptiles were nervous, Freia pulled out her staff, Setsuna covered her forearms with ice gauntlets, and even Keyaruga couldn’t help but grope the handle of his saber, while looking back to see, if the egg was still with him. “Just so you know, I was on my way to save them myself, and as such, this call is on me.”
“Haa… Thank you…” Eve spoke, stroke by fatigue from just the summoning. The Hero of Healing nervously glared at the woman, ready to step up, if the deity breaks her oath.
“Hold tight. This will not be a pleasant flight.”
And just like that, Caladrius lunged forward. And oh, boy, did she not exaggerate. Her speed was at least a few times greater than sound itself. Probably, without the protective sphere, no being lesser than a god could survive the trip. And the party? Well, they still had a long way to go before they could claim that particular label.
…
Thirty-two seconds.
Keyaruga deliberately counted time, it’d take to reach Visou, and it took only half a minute! As if a few hundred kilometers were nothing at all!
“Holy gods…” The man muttered, looking down to the hell that was once a peaceful village. The wall was breached, the houses, old and new, were engulfed in raging flames, but even that wouldn’t stop the invaders from marauding whatever they might find inside the burning houses. They stomped the crops, they stole the livestock, burned the buildings just for fun. The brigade killed everyone in sight. Corpses… at least thirty corpses were lying around, completely untended, sometimes even looted, or outright defiled in the most gruesome manners. Cannibalism, necrophilia, gruesome rituals amidst the smoldering village. “I’m excited to present to all of you: Gramgrim, the most fucked up brigade in the whole of Tenanulic.” The red-haired lad muttered with an eerie glee of suppressed emotions.
Again! This fucking happened all over again! Because of me! Because I came here! Ah, to hell with it! Survivors! I must find someone, somebody! At least one! Please…
“There are no survivors, little ones. Only abominations, undeserving to live. I do not wish you to battle them, as your chances are slim.” Caladrius spoke with little to no regard towards the fallen. This was the formation that once almost ended the four heroes’ journey in the first world. By any sane measure, Keyaruga should’ve been terrified of them.
“I’m immortal, I don’t give a shit.” But he wasn’t. The Hero of Healing muttered, clattering his teeth with a desperate rage. He wanted to kill, to murder with every bit of cruelty he had inside of him, with no regard as to what others might see in him while doing so.
“Well, we aren’t, brother!” Ellen came down to the rescue. Her cold-blooded rationality greatly contrasted with everyone inside the magic bubble. Setsuna growled wrathfully, Freia was on the verge of crying, and Eve just couldn’t believe her eyes. Even raptors seemed distressed by the view. Visou, the village they all lived, worked, loved, grieved and rejoiced with was now lost forever. What was meant to be a refuge for all the persecuted… now became their cemetery. “Right now we must…”
“Caladrius…” Eve uttered calmly. She was furious, hateful, disturbed, and disgusted, and yet, all that fire heated so much, it turned into a freezing cold.
“What is it, little one?” The divine bird asked, flapping her wings above the blazing ruins.
“Kill them.” The lady in red spoke calmly. Her morbidly red eyes were shaking in pain, but she couldn’t look away, couldn’t even blink.
“What is the point? Who do you aim to save this way, when everyone is dead?” The harbinger of plague wondered, more intrigued, than anything else. Yet, upon this being said, not only Ellen, but everyone else now shared the former’s disdain toward the deity. “Do you really wish to use one of…”
“It was YOU, who was meant to protect them! YOU had to be there for MY people! But instead of that, you TORTURED US by making us meet those, who we could NEVER forgive! So now, YOU get your flappy ass above them and KILL WHO I TELL YOU TO KILL!!!” Eve Reese snarled frantically. She stopped caring about manners, decency, and practicality even. Now that the woman remembered her past life, she knew how useful this formation could be. But no, keeping them around was Cornar’s wish, and now that he was dead for sure, nothing prevented her from cleansing those cruel war-thirsty maniacs.
“He-he-he-he-he-heh… Oh, magpie…” Ellen shook her head, watching as the legendary creature now circled around Visou. As she did so, the white ash started falling from her wings. Freia and Setsuna looked on silently, as the cruel battalion began falling one after another, and no magic shields could protect them against the divine blight for too long. The Hero of Magic could do it herself, but the Me-ua kahul wouldn’t allow it. It was her rightful vengeance, her responsibility. Caladrius wouldn’t tax her mistress this time, but even so, a precious part of Eve’s soul just died within her.

Folks who work at Citipups tell TMZ ... Pete and Chase came through May 21 and left with a cavapoo puppy. We’re told the pup, a boy, was only 2.5 months old ... and he didn’t have a name, so Pete and Chase have a big decision to make.
The puppy’s not a rescue or anything ... we’re told it was from a breeder.
Leading up to Pete’s in-store visit, we’re told Pete was in contact with Citipups and told them he fell in love with the cavapoo after seeing a photo of the pup.
Pete brought Chase along with him ... and we’re told they loved the dog and bought it on the spot.
Naturally, we’re told Pete and Chase are super excited with their new pup ... though it’s unclear if it’s Pete’s dog or if they got it together.
