CEOs got smaller raises. It would still take a typical worker two lifetimes to make their annual pay AP News
I found this disturbing at first. The average worker needing 50 or 60 years of salary to earn as much a CEO. (See link above).
Which CEO is average, though? I draw a distinction between guys (and women) who invent something neat, then risk everything to bring it to market. Steve Jobs of Apple. Bill Gates of Microsoft. Maybe even Elon Musk, of Tesla – although much of his good fortune came from conning the Obama administration into doling out tax rebates for millionaires scooping up his first edition $100,000 Telsa hot rods. That's called “an inflection point”. Once you reach a critical mass of sales, you're home free.
I'm less certain about CEOs who don't invent stuff – who just hype it. Jeff Bezos didn't invent the idea of online shopping and home delivery. That was probably Sears Roebuck. Which went bankrupt because they couldn't figure out how to get it right. And kudos to Bezos for using other people's money to build thousands of warehouses, and serving us up a bunch of faux/imitation crapola from China. Is Jeff a genius? Compared to you and me, for sure! If I had the brains and guts to do that, I surely would have. I just hope I didn't go bankrupt and into oblivion if I got it wrong.
True confession – I've always hated Facebook. Not Mark Zuckerberg personally. Just the idea that a website - invented to keep you connected with friends and family- has become a monster. One of the biggest threats to personal privacy. It sells our “cookies” to the highest bidder. When I research a potential purchase – dog kibble, a car, or some obscure book –for weeks afterwards I will be inundated with alternative products, from obscure companies. Until my car and kibble cookies are eclipsed by my next search for canvas summer shoes. Do I need to remind everyone that Facebook is also a stew of "moderator approved" conspiracy theories and state sponsored trolls?
Google is the real cookie monster. Online search engines aren't the same kind of game changer as fire, the wheel, or atomic fission. But Google is getting its comeuppance. Hemmed in by a gazillion lawsuits for "scraping" intellectual property from other sites, and for manipulating their search results for a kickback. Just wait 'til Artificial Intelligence really gets rolling. Search engines will serve up amalgamated/composite results, instead of linking us to trusted sources. If you ask CHATGPT if the earth is round, it might hedge its bets and tell you there's a 2% chance the world is flat. That, of course, would be based on the millions of results it has seen. How else could AI already conclude that white supremacy, pedophilia, and genocide of Jews are mainstream ideas?
Back to giant CEO pay. I'd have less angst if there were also giant CEO taxes being paid. But no one really knows how much bozos like Bezos pay. Certainly they have enough left over to build 500 foot mega-yatchs. To buy mansions in 7 countries. To keep a small army of guys in Zurich watching over their numbered, tax evading bank accounts.
I should confess that i am NOT a tax accountant. All I know is that there's more than 2,000 pages of IRS regulations - just for me. That's the length if you're an individual filer with a normal W2 wage statement. If you're a billionaire, or a corporation, or a subchapter S partnership, or an entertainer with royalties, or an NBA superstar college dropout with deferred income going decades into the future . . . well, who know how many pages of loopholes are baked into YOUR regulations?
My point is this: the world – well, America at least - would be a lot fairer if we had a straight income tax. Exclude the first $25,000 or $50,000 in income. Then pay something easy to understand on the rest. 17% ? 25%? I've seen both numbers argued. Forget all the deceptive crap. Tank those tax deductions for yachts masquerading as second homes. Drop carry forward interest. Let capital sinking funds sink under the waves. Forget farmland tax credits on land which you had no intention of farming, and never got enough rain to grow squat on anyway.
Pick a number for the income tax rate, and let's go with it. Maybe even two numbers. A normal rate for incomes less than $250,000 a year, and a higher rate for incomes over that. But no BS deductions. Your rate is your rate. Whether you're a stoner, a schoolteacher, or software billionaire with a yacht bigger than the Titanic.
Can we at least discuss this?
I now open the floor for debate: to everyone in this forum claiming to be a tax accountant, a socialist/redistributionist, or a millionaire. Tell me straight up why it's unfair to have simple income taxes? And just forget all the tricky loopholes created by politicians for their rich buddies?
Yes, I'm aware that someone is going to snark that “rich guys” will simply flee to a place with low taxes. Someplace usually run by a nasty dictator. That's their choice. I guess we'll just have to depend on the self evident advantages of democracy, a fair legal system, and human rights to make America's case. After all, people like Elon Musk (from South Africa), Sergei Brin, co-founder of Google (from Russia), and Zoom founder Eric Yuan (China) didn't come to America because they heard about our tax rates, did they?

It was found that Ruffin was peniniless and Jackson contacted Swanson Funeral Home in Detroit to make arrangements to cover a large portion of the June 10th funeral costs. He also sends a heart-shaped arrangement of carnations to the New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit with the note, "With Love, from Michael Jackson".

Judge Melville gives the Jury the rules of Jury Deliberations
Michael Jackson sat quietly in court as the 12 jurors were given their instructions ahead of closing arguments from both sides.
"You've heard all of the evidence and you will hear the arguments of attorneys," Judge Rodney Melville told the jury. He told them to make their decision without "pity for or prejudice toward" the defendant.
The eight women & four men who will decide his fate will hear closing arguments today and could begin their deliberations as early as Friday (it is currently Wednesday). Jurors are expected to hammer out their decision behind closed doors for about six hours a day until they reach their verdict or announce a deadlock.
The charges against Jackson consist of four counts of molestation, four counts of giving the boy alcohol in order to abuse him, one count of conspiracy and one of attempted molestation.
Jurors were told they could consider the four alcohol counts as lesser charges of "furnishing alcohol to a minor." This would be considered a misdemeanor and means that the jury would not have to relate the alcohol to any intended molestation.
Judge Melville told jurors not to consider the four videos played in the trial for the truth of any remarks made in them, except for certain statements that prosecutors claim are admissions from Jackson. These statements will be outlined in a document to be provided by prosecutors.
The Judge also instructed the jury on how to consider the past allegations against Jackson. He said that if they determine he does have such a history, "you may but are not required to infer that the defendant had a predisposition" to commit the crimes alleged in this case.
But he added “that is not sufficient in itself to prove he committed the crimes charged
He also told them not to infer anything from the fact Jackson himself had decided not to testify.
Thomas Mesereau will deliver closing arguments for the defense while Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen is expected to deliver the prosecution’s closing statements.

Longtime recording engineer, Michael Prince, who was working with Jackson at the time “Hold My Hand” leaked, recalls:
“He was truly upset when the song he did with Akon leaked. He would just get this sad look on his face like, how could this happen? Because 20 years ago this would not have happened. And somehow everybody in the world has a copy of it. And that really upset him because he liked that song a lot.”
Akon gave a detailed account of the events surrounding the leak during an appearance on Tavis Smiley’s PBS television show in January 2009:
“Me and Mike did this incredible record called Hold My Hand and the record is amazing. Phenomenal. And the concept was that this would be Mike’s first release off of his new album, and then I would stripe it on my album – on my following release. That way we could have the outlets open for everyone to be able to receive the record. You know, Mike came up with this brilliant marketing launch for the record. You know, he’s the best at launching a record.”
Akon continues:
“He’d have the whole world paying attention in two minutes… And before we could get to that point, the record got leaked over the internet. And we got over 15 million downloads on the song for free. So we couldn’t [release it]. You can’t at that point. Everybody already has the record. But in a way, you gotta look at it like… that’s just a gift to the fans.”

As a result of a financial reorganiation of the Neverland Valley Ranch, all of Michael’s personal belongings have to be removed from the property.   • “Earth Song” (3D short film featuring little girl who wanders through rain forest, takes a nap and dreams of the splendor of nature, and awakens to find the natural world has been devastated)
  • “They Don’t Care About Us” (a/k/a Drill, 2D film in which a sea of soldiers march in unison; 10 male dancers replicated hundreds of times)
  • “MJ Air” (3-D movie in which a 707 jet pulls into the frame; hole was to open in screen for Michael Jackson to enter; jet flies away)
  • “The Final Message” (3-D movie of a little girl from rain forest embracing the earth)
  • “The Way You Make Me Feel” (2D theatrical background featuring male dancers fashioned as historical construction workers.

I own land in Klamath county Oregon, in a “town” of less than 100. I’ve lived all over the west coast and the mountain regions, but this was different.
During fire season, things got odd. This was in 2020-2021 especially. I noticed many fires within a short period. It would be a regular occurrence to wake up to smoke billowing over my land from a new fire.
These fires were all visible to me from my home sometimes over a hill, sometimes I could see flames. One night I had a dream of a wall of fire and within a few days my closest neighbors old property in the woods burned down. He wasn’t there, nobody was.
When the fire fighters came, they had new fires starting when the other fire was being put out in my neighborhood, but the little ones were going against the direction of the wind and blocked by hills, rocks and trees, etc. and shouldn’t have been spread by the previous fire. so they had to do extra investigations and couldn’t figure out how it would be possible to naturally spread like that when the fire clean up was already finishing up.
They used a water tank plane on my neighbors small property because it was already putting out 3 other forest fires started within 24 hours, in the same area within a few miles
Sometimes there would be up to a dozen large fires nearby, within a week. Often times by the River down the road and also towards crater lake area.
I also noticed a lot of these were in a line visually, not an exact line but a general geographical line on a large scale meaning it’s like they were being burnt methodically for periods of time. Over a large area.
The military has a base in Klamath falls nearly 60 miles away and fly over often, also the trails in the sky sometimes were at insane levels during this period. (No idea if they’re related with fire)
The explanation of these fires varied, often times there would be a controlled burn, then they’d repost the same story but say it was a forest fire and it was a surprise. Which I thought was odd. Some were possible arson or garbage burning.
The weirdest moments for me were when they were saying it was caused by lightning on sunny blue days with very few clouds.
An area nearby where I go for solitude in nature, was nearly complete burnt in the bootleg fire. It is a very secluded area away from anything. It just so happens to be where a monument is for the only world war 2 enemy bombing site in mainland usa. when a bomb took out school kids outside in the forest during world war 2.
Now I only mention those details to explain that this area gets very weird mysterious vibes and I’m not very superstitious but something just seemed … off and bad.

2023.06.01 11:56 express_infinity Yes - non-residents still CAN get a L-visa at Hong Kong

Given recent questions as well as success stories in Macau, I wanted to write about my experience successfully getting an L-visa through the visa application centre in Hong Kong as an Australian citizen.
This contrasts to Chinese embassies in multiple Balkan countries which would not accept my application as a non-citizen or non-resident.
Applied for: 30 day single entry L-visa. Just wanted to do some travel there before I head home.
What I needed:
-Original passport
-Photocopy of passport information page
-Passport size photo - yes, you need a physical copy as well, even though you submit one online. I had to take another one at the photobooth
-Hong Kong landing slip (they give you this at the airport)
-Photocopy of HK landing slip (I didn't have this so they sent me to the photocopier)
-Train reservation HK to Beijing via trip.com
-Hostel reservation in Beijing 14 nights
-Flight reservation Beijing to Tokyo via ANA
-Completed application form matching the itinerary above
-Appointment confirmation
Process - application 1. Completed application form online 2. Booked appointment online 3. Arrived at application centre 10 mins before my slot 4. At slot was taken to wait for pre-check in another line (backlog from previous slots) 5. Pre-check: staff member checked I had all documents, sent me away to get what was missing (physical, passport-sized photo, photocopy of HK landing slip). Eventually gave me number to wait for main counter. 6. Main counter: Documents checked very thoroughly page by page, fingerprints taken, documents including passport and landing slip taken and bundled up. Found error in my application form and asked me to correct in pen (wrong passport expiry date - yes that is how thoroughly they check). Told me cost. Gave me number to wait for cashier. 7. Cashier: Took money. Told me pick up time. Only cash or HK FPS is accepted. You can find an ATM while you wait.
Total time: Approx 2.5 hours
Turnaround time (express): 2 working days.
Apply in afternoon, pick up in afternoon 2 days later.
Fees: HK$550 for 30 day single-entry L visa
Plus HK$390 extra for express processing
Notes:
-The centre has photocopiers, photobooths, WiFi, and I think public computers too. Pretty crowded place.
-The photocopiers only take Octopus card (HK$10/sheet) and the photobooths only take cash ($HK90 - $10/20/50 bills only, no change). The WiFi is free.
-They didn't mind a train ticket from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Beijing (rather than an air ticket). This is 95% refundable if you book more than 8 days in advance.
-They didn't mind that my Trip.com train ticket was "Reservation successful. Awaiting ticket sale" only (I couldn't book a confirmed ticket that far in advance)
-They didn't mind that my outbound ticket was to a third country (Japan) rather than HK
-My passport didn't have any Turkish stamps. However someone I talked to was in Turkey for one month, they noticed the stamps and looked very suspicious and asked him to explain why he was there. In the end he withdrew his application for separate reasons.
-The same guy had a multi-stop itinerary. They wanted hotel accommodation for every stop. They also wanted a train ticket for one particular inter-China journey but not any others, he didn't get a clear reason why.
-My passport was more than 5 years old so idk if you need to give them your old passports too if you passport is newer
-I had never been to China before so idk if you need to give them your old visas
-Didn't apply for a double-entry or longer visa so idk if you can get it
-They do hold your passport and landing slip while they process your visa
-I cancelled all my reservations after I received my visa and will be going to China on different dates

Every passing day feels like a never-ending nightmare, gradually consuming my sanity. I can feel myself descending into madness, constantly on edge, my fight-or-flight instinct perpetually activated. There is no respite, not even in the darkness of night. The air is thick with the echoes of tormented screams that haunt our sleep, ensuring that even our dreams are tainted with despair. It’s bewildering how this place not only confines the body but also imprisons the mind. Amidst this bleak existence, I find solace in the intimidating visage I possess and the imposing physique I bear. It sets me apart from those who have succumbed to the depths of this grim abyss, their bodies now six feet under the ground. However, my physique alone could only provide limited protection. It is my own foolish mistakes that may ultimately lead to my demise, or rather, will lead to my death. I have already committed my first error by offending a notorious gang leader. In that moment, an opportunity, as precarious as a spider’s silk, presented itself. The guard, his malevolence etched deep into his sneering face, loomed close to me. I weighed my options, knowing that the wrong move would condemn me to a merciless demise. The specter of death whispered in my ear, urging me to fight back, to strike first and defy the shackles of my oppressors. Without a flicker of hesitation, my hand shot out, the palm of my trembling hand connecting with the guard’s face in a resounding slap that echoed through the corridor. Come here!” his voice boomed, a thunderous growl that reverberated in the depths of my soul. He charged towards me, wielding his formidable bat with a sadistic gleam in his eyes, as if relishing the opportunity to unleash his cruelty upon my defenseless body. Driven by desperation, I fought back, fueled by the primal instinct to survive at any cost. Blow after blow, I struck with a ferocity borne from a place deep within me, each slap a desperate plea for freedom. But my resistance was futile, a fleeting flicker of defiance in the face of an unyielding storm. The guard’s retaliatory onslaught descended upon me like a torrential downpour of unrelenting agony. His weapon became an extension of his twisted will, delivering bone-shattering blows that fractured my body and shattered my spirit. Surprised and puzzled, I questioned how I could hear him. Shouldn’t I be in complete isolation? “Kid, I know you can hear me,” he confidently declared, as if he held a secret knowledge. Uncertainty gripped me, leaving me unsure of how to respond or what actions to take in this confined world. To hell with it, I thought. I was already in isolation, so why not engage in conversation? I needed someone to talk to, to maintain a sliver of sanity amidst the suffocating solitude. Even though I believed I wouldn’t lose my grip on reality, I knew that prolonged isolation could weaken even the strongest of minds. So, with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, I mustered the courage to respond, “Yeah, I can hear you, old man. What do you want?” Yet, a nagging question lingered in the back of my mind. How was it even possible for the old man to communicate with me in this isolated prison? “Nothing. I don’t need anything. I just want to talk. Is that a problem?” the old man’s voice carried a hint of loneliness, longing for connection. “No, not at all,” I replied, my curiosity piqued by his request. “Well then, what’s your name, kid?” he inquired, his tone friendly. “I’m Anvis. And you?” I responded, eager to continue the conversation. “What a peculiar name. Well, I’ve heard stranger names in my lifetime. I’m Sam,” he revealed, his voice warm and inviting. “So, what landed you in this place?” he asked. “I was involved in the creation and sale of ghost weapons,” I confessed, a tinge of regret in my voice. “Ghost weapons… ah, yes, I’ve heard about them. You mean those 3D-printed guns? You must have had quite the knack for designing them,” Sam remarked, genuinely interested. “I suppose you could say that, though I never intended for things to turn out this way,” I explained, a mix of frustration and remorse seeping into my words. Sam’s voice filled with curiosity as he asked, “What do you mean?” “Let’s just say I was caught up in a difficult situation. Growing up as an orphan, I found myself entangled with the wrong crowd, doing whatever it took to survive. Unfortunately, that path led me to get involved in the production of ghost weapons. I had no choice, really. It was a matter of self-preservation,” I confessed, a hint of vulnerability in my voice. I don't know why, but confessing to Sam felt warm, like talking with a friend. Listening intently, Sam responded empathetically, “Sometimes life pushes us into corners we never anticipated. It’s not always easy to make the right choices when survival is at stake.” Encouraged by his understanding, I continued, “Exactly. I didn’t want any part in it, but circumstances forced my hand. I was coerced into designing those guns under the threat of exposure. However, fate had its own plans. When I went to deliver the weapons, the authorities swooped in, intercepting the guns before they could be used for harm. In a strange way, I felt a sense of relief that they didn’t end up causing any damage.” Sam nodded thoughtfully before sharing his own story, “Well, in my case, I had quite an extraordinary entrance into this prison. I fell through a portal and ended up here.” Oh great, I am talking to a lunatic.

2023.06.01 11:42 No-Stress-3017 Selling house verses filing when you have a lot of equity

Hey everyone,
Posting anonymously because this is a really hard time right now. I'll try to keep this succinct. My wife and I have a house we bought in 2020 that has gone from 300k value to somewhere between 500-650k value (we're meeting with our realtor tomorrow). We moved around a lot in our twenties and accumulated debt during that time living below the poverty line, and well now we have a kid, we've accumulated more and its gotten to point where we're having to make some tough calls. We have around 100k total in debt (50k in loans we took a year ago to pay off the old credit card debt from twenties, 20k in new credit card debt since having a kid and not being able to find any childcare so spouse had to reduce hours, 6k in medical debt from a surgery I had this year, and another 20k in student loans that I know bankruptcy wont help with). We have 270k left on mortgage, so there's potential for us to make anywhere from 175-300k from a sale and pay off all debts and have money for a down payment on a new house closer to family (we're in NC currently). Though I will say if we had no debt I could cover all of our costs under my income, so really the debt payments we have currently are what has dragged us under. Under North Carolina I believe we can only exempt 70k total in equity, which I feel like would leave us on the hook for all our debt still or the bankruptcy court would just sell our house right?
TLDR: We have 200kish in equity, should we sell to pay off debts and move somewhere more affordable or is there a way to file for bankruptcy and not lose the house but also not land another debt bill in the process?
Thanks a ton for anyone who replies in advance, I'm doing my best to be proactive despite feeling like a total failure right now.

I would like to sell a few food items out in the open by the side of the street, I see people do this all the time and wanted to know if anyone can tell me how do they do it legally? I've seen a few areas with vacant land that's for sale, Ive attempted to get ahold of the realtors/owners but they never respond; Just wanted to know if i could do this legally or see exactly how illegal it is lol.
