2023.06.01 13:10 Asatmaya Wisdom From the Wind
Found in a post on Moon of Alabama by a user named Intelligent Dasein:
Before I begin, I would just like to clarify something that is of general interest to the conversation on this blog. The Z-Man is fond of saying that the Cloud People "really believe" their own propaganda about wokeness and the GAE, and this point of view is contrasted with those who think that nobody could be so silly as to believe what Leftists claim to believe, so the woke politicians must really be making cynical bids for power by mouthing the right dogmas. The truth is that each of these points of view is partially right and partially wrong.
On the one hand, career politicians do have highly developed instincts about what sorts of things to say to advance their own careers, and the "truth" of every utterance, as far as they're concerned, is merely its utilitarian value in achieving this end. Thus, those who claim they are making cynical bids for power, are not wrong. But on the other hand, they do really "believe" all the nonsense about climate change and electric vehicles and Covid and so forth, so those who claim they are true believers are not wrong, either.
Where both sides are wrong, however, is in the implicit assumptions that the true believers believe what they believe in the manner of someone who actually knows what they are talking about, or that they pursue power in the manner of someone who ruthlessly calculated a strategy.
It is fair to say that none of the political defenders of Gaia actually understand real geophysics, none of the Branch Covidians understand much about viruses, and none of the Ukrainiacs actually understand the problems of industrial warfare and economic production in the modern world. They may very well believe in climate change and Glory to Ukraine, but they don't have a prudent man's grounds for their belief. The prudent man must make sure that his facts are true, that his thoughts are logical, and that his ends are both desirable and possible within the framework of facts and logic. Leftist "beliefs" do not fit the criteria of what a prudent man believes, thus they are by definition not "truly" believed, no matter how fervently insisted upon.
Likewise, their grasping at power does not proceed by way of Machiavellian machinations struggling upward, but by sanctimonious demagoguery catering downward. Their desire to appeal to the mass, to the base, to the lowest common denominator, is not so much a cynical tactic as it is a natural process of settling. Their crude thought finds its level in banal, tubthumping slogans and spiteful attacks upon the betters. It is their way because it is the easy way.
Nobody with this mindset, this dual lack of all intelligence and character, can possibly understand what is going on in Russia today. Russia does not have an end game. For Russia, this is simply life. Ukraine is now the frontier, the dark forest which is never quite emptied or pacified. They are prepared for their campaign to last decades until the West is bankrupted, NATO is broken, and the Americans withdraw from Europe. They no more think about winning a war with Ukraine than a sailor thinks about wining a war with the sea or a Bedouin thinks about winning a war with the sand. They simply live with it until they understand it and transform it into themselves.

2023.06.01 13:08 mikejohn923 Explanation to why games feel so out of control in high elo
About 80-100 games in new patch in GM/Chall elo and here are most important things you need to adjust:
Baron buff isn't as op as it was before. I feel like you do not get as much stats as you were getting before. I didn't find any info in patch notes but it is just how it feels like. Before patch, you could braindead push and dive inhib without any issue with baron buff and end game most of the time. Now, because towers deal more dmg and have more armor pen, plus baron lasts shorter and again, it feels like you get less stats, baron buff is not a guarantee to end the game. Most of the time we lost because we were overconfident with baron and got wiped. So the most important thing is to adjust is assessing your win conditions and do not get overconfident with baron buff. Again, this lost me most of my games.
I don't know about lower elo, but from my experience, given similar skill level, games last 20-25 minutes with elder and baron slain multiple times from both sides. Sure there are games when one master or an autofilled feeds, enemy team notices it instantly and capitalizes on it by getting first tower and snowballs from that.
This leads me to next point: early game. Basically It is better to rotate to winning lane get a kill and get first tower before drake spawns because outer towers get demolished really easy, then prep for drake and give away herald because herald already lost its value because of first tower. Only thing you need to worry is not allowing herald get 2 towers, which is quite doable. In patch notes it says herald deals 2k dmg, but I've seen it deal 2.3-2.4 dmg to outer tower and it deals more dmg to inner tower.
Dragons: drakes are most important than ever in this patch. Specially Ice drake. Remember. drakes stack and it stacks with elder as well. So you need to contest them as a whole team. If you get at least 2 drakes, your chance to win increase dramatically.
Pick/Ban: Kaisa, Lulu, Yuumi, Yone should be 100% pick/ban. Tank supports are less viable than enchanter supports, but it depends on team comp. Imo Ashe support is overrated by Chinese players or people didn't figure her put yet in West. Olaf is strong pick but situational. Ad assassins shine in new meta. Ap is kinda dead unless you are god onetrick on certain chapms. I like to ban Zoe from time to time as well. Rammus is giga monster this patch but so few people play him... So if you see 2-3 adcs in enemy team, instalock Rammus. If you play any tank, don't forget to adjust your build. for most ad in enemy team, Frozen Heart, Randuin are go to. Frozen Heart saved my ass tons of times.
I won't write more obvious suggestions like how to itemize adcs or how to play enchanter supports, but the main thing you need to prepare is to get out from your comfort zone, adjust, adapt and find counter-strategies.

2023.06.01 13:02 Zghva [WAR] Setting a Better Example
1519 Following the
Treaty of Tabriz, an agreement has been reached with the Safavids. Although we did not achieve all we could have hoped for, Georgia has regained control of its capital city and the important religious site of the Apostolic See in Echmiadzin. The population of the region has welcomed our return with open arms, but a serious challenge to our governance remains. We have publicly called for hostilities to cease, as have Ottoman and Safavid diplomats. Although wanton violence and pillaging seems to be an accepted norm in Ismail’s realm, we must set a better example. The continued presence of a hostile army in our territory cannot be accepted. Before we can celebrate our victory we must focus on securing the southern frontier. It is time to use the resources at our disposal to crush these Safavid deserters.
Our army near Shaki will attempt to withdraw in good order, again offering asylum to the Khan of Shaki at our court. Negotiations are underway with the Meliks of Karabakh, who have been overrun with ghazi brigands. They have pledged loyalty to us, and Ismail has relinquished his claim over their lands. We will liberate their lands once we have liberated the remainder of Armenia.
It is time to make an example of the brigands pillaging Armenia. Ismail has again shown his true colors, more interested in loot than in establishing government.
[S] Because the raiders which have declined to leave Armenia are weighed down with ill-gotten treasure, we have a clear opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to this region. The portion of our southern army returning from Tabriz will advance from the south, aided by returning Moldavian troops on their way to Batumi.
The group retreating in Armenia will attempt to regain control over the region, reinforcing Yerevan and Echmiadzin in preparation for the arrival of the other troops from Shaki and from Tabriz. This group should avoid attacking until reinforcements arrive.
Our northern army will reinforce and advance over the mountains toward Giorgiskalaki, Echmiadzin, and Yerevan. This group will then make preparations to attack the thieves in a sweeping motion along the Aras River. Prince Demetre will come to the aid of the forces currently in Armenia.
Just as we previously delivered grain to Guria, Shaki and Tabriz, 30000 florins of additional funding will be disbursed to ensure that starvation and pillaging be kept to a minimum, and that the ties of the local church to our monarchy be strengthened as much as possible. Another delivery of grain will reduce the pressure on the farms of Armenia, which may not reap a normal harvest this year. This funding will be disbursed behind the advance as our armies see fit, with effort taken to protect this shipment from the marauders as our army advances from the Mtkvari valley.
As our armies sweep generally from west to east, we will attempt to find favorable terrain for our army and skirmish opportunistically. The rebel khan does not deserve to sleep well at night, so we will harass his camp whenever he pauses to regroup.
Our primary objectives include the redistribution of the Shia ghazis’ wealth to the local church and peasantry, the future judgement of these raiders in public judgements overseen by Georgians and Armenians, and the normalization of Georgian authority in the areas recently overrun by the invaders. If he is captured alive, the rebel khan will be paraded publicly and imprisoned for later judgment as we see fit.
[M] 30000 florins of relief, aimed at replenishing local food supply and gaining even greater support. Armies will regroup in the southwest before advancing to the east. They will try to capture leaders alive.

This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 57%. (I'm a bot)
A US-Israeli woman has died after 22 years in a coma from injuries suffered in a Palestinian suicide bombing at a pizza restaurant in Jerusalem.
Tamimi helped the bomber, Izz al-Din Shuheil al-Masri, carry out the attack.
The parents of one of the two other US citizens killed in the attack - Malki Roth, who was 15 at the time - have campaigned for years for the US to do more to effect Tamimi's extradition.
The Sbarro restaurant, at a busy intersection in the centre of west Jerusalem, was packed with customers when Tamimi and Masri, both Hamas members, entered on 9 August.
Tamimi, who chose the target, left before Masri blew himself up.
It was one of multiple suicide bombings by Hamas during the second Palestinian intifada, or uprising, against Israel, which began the previous year and tailed off in 2005.

2023.06.01 12:46 SeriousDookie My weird experience with fires in southern Oregon, thoughts?
I own land in Klamath county Oregon, in a “town” of less than 100. I’ve lived all over the west coast and the mountain regions, but this was different.
During fire season, things got odd. This was in 2020-2021 especially. I noticed many fires within a short period. It would be a regular occurrence to wake up to smoke billowing over my land from a new fire.
These fires were all visible to me from my home sometimes over a hill, sometimes I could see flames. One night I had a dream of a wall of fire and within a few days my closest neighbors old property in the woods burned down. He wasn’t there, nobody was. When the fire fighters came, they had new fires starting when the other fire was being put out in my neighborhood, but the little fires in my neighborhood were going against the direction of the wind and blocked by hills, rocks and trees, etc. and shouldn’t have been spread by the previous fire, so they had to do extra investigations and couldn’t figure out how it would be possible to naturally spread like that when the fire clean up was finishing up.
They used a water tank plane on my neighbors small property because it was already putting out 3 other forest fires started within 24 hours, in the same area within a few miles
Sometimes there would be up to a dozen large fires including big forest fires within a week. Often times by the River down the road and also towards crater lake area
I also noticed a lot of these fires were in a line visually, not an exact line but a general geographical line on a large scale meaning it’s like they were being burnt methodically for periods of time. Over a large area.
The military has a base in Klamath falls nearly 60 miles away and fly over often, also the trails in the sky sometimes were at insane levels during this period. (No idea if they’re related with fire)
The explanation of these fires varied, sometimes they’d say they don’t know, sometimes it was someone burning garbage in their yard, some were claimed as possible arson, often times there would be a controlled burn, then they’d repost the same story but say it was a forest fire and it was a surprise. Which I thought was odd.
An area nearby where I go for solitude in nature, was nearly complete burnt in the bootleg fire. It is a very secluded area away from anything and just so happens to be where a monument is for the only world war 2 enemy bombing site in mainland usa. when a bomb took out school kids outside in the forest during world war 2.
Now I only mention those details to explain that this area gets very weird mysterious vibes and I’m not very superstitious but something just seemed … off and bad.
I’ve lived in many hot forested areas, some much hotter than this, but never the amount of fires, not even close.
Thoughts?

2023.06.01 12:28 amityamityamityam Harassment from neighbours in the form of reports to police, child services, etc.
Hello, apologies for the long post.
My family (myself, my partner and our son) moved into our flat (rented in London) last summer, and it quickly became clear that our neighbours (M+F, mid 40s) in the flat below would cause us issues.
In under a week after moving in we had the first notes being put through our door. These were complaining about everything from parking too close to their car, to walking around with shoes on or hoovering. We were more naive then, and don't like conflict, so we always sent an apology note, and tried to be quieter.
It quickly became clear that appeasing them wasn't going to work. Despite trying our best to be quiet on the floor and hoover only in the middle of the day, we received the first email from our landlord that there had been noise complaints about us, and if it didn't stop he would take action against us. These specifically mentioned walking around, using the washing machine and hoovering.
At this point we were very anxious about being evicted, so I took measures to make sure we were as quiet as possible, such as buying cushioned slippers for all of us. However, we soon received more emails from our landlord, and also letters from the council pollution team about noise complaints.
At around the same time, they started banging furiously on the ceiling every time we hoovered. This was particularly distressing to my partner, as she feared they would come upstairs in anger. We stopped hoovering altogether for her sake and bought a broom to sweep.
Things got worse from there as our son was taken out of class one day by the welfare officer, and questioned about us as parents. We found this out from him when he came home and wasn't notified by the school. I had a meeting with the welfare officer the next day, and she explained that they were acting on an anonymous complaint.
The banging on the ceiling got worse and more aggressive in nature, so I contacted the police. It was passed to the local neighbourhood team. An officer visited us and told us he would speak to them to. He told them to stop banging, but also said he couldn't do much else as it was a neighbour dispute, and they had made counter complaints against us for noise.
While dealing with these reports and complaints, we were also dealing with lots anti-social behaviour from them. They drink a lot and often come home in the early hours of the morning, shouting and arguing and we often hear loud smashes and banging. One night we had to call 999, as it sounded as if the wife was being attacked by her husband. In the morning we found out that he had broken in their front door in a rage. The police attended and removed the husband from the building.
However, a few days later, the police came to our flat. I assumed it was to gather more info on the incident form before, but they told me they were here because they had received noise and anti-social behaviour complaints from our neighbours below. I was completely shocked, and it took me a while to explain to the police that it was likely just retaliation for the 999 call we had made a few evenings before. They seemed to understand, and really just seemed annoyed to be involved in something so silly.
I called the council around this time, and received a letter form the head community trigger officer, she explained that she had personally dealt with our neighbours as they had tried to escalated complaints to her office a month before hand. She explained that she believed their behaviour constituted harassment, and that we should consider applying for an N16a injunction against them. I think this is a good idea, but I am struggling to find legal support or help on how to proceed. The form is online on .GOV, but it is confusing and appears as though it should be filled out by a lawyer. I sent a few emails to places like the South West London Law Centre, but have received replies saying they can't assist in this matter, as it's a neighbour dispute.
I would really appreciate any advice on how best to go about filing a N16a, or any other advice anyone can give us.
We have also contacted our landlord about these issues, but he refers us to the council and the police. We would also love to move, but money is very tight atm as my partner is currently retraining.
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
Here's my poor attempt to sell myself like a bad infomercial. My social circle is pretty much limited to people I work with or short conversations with customers. I live in the US on the East Coast but grew up on the West Coast. I have two high-energy dogs, an Australian shepherd mix and huskie mix. I have a 1 year old son. I do enjoy cooking and making new dishes, but I am by far the worst baker. My favorite TV show is the office, please don't say parks and rec is better. I've had many random jobs in the past, with even random stories to go along with. I'm a bit of a nerd, I have a comic collection and random Star Wars collectibles, but I'm not ashamed. I have a few tattoos that have no meaning at all, and I plan on getting more soon. My music taste is stuck in the early 2000s rock, punk, and screamo. I'm just trying to make a friend outside of work.

2023.06.01 12:11 autotldr Geraint Davies: Labour MP suspended over behaviour claims
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 59%. (I'm a bot)
Labour MP Geraint Davies has been suspended from the party after claims of "Completely unacceptable behaviour".
Labour said the allegations were "Incredibly serious" and encouraged anyone with a complaint to report it to the party.
"None of them, as far as I know, has been lodged as complaints with the Labour Party or Parliament," he said.
Mr Davies has been administratively suspended from the party pending an investigation into the allegations.
This means he can not sit as a Labour MP while the investigation is ongoing, although he remains the member of Parliament for Swansea West and will sit as an independent.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: "These are incredibly serious allegations of completely unacceptable behaviour."We strongly encourage anyone with a complaint to come forward to the Labour party's investigation.

There’s an old cold storage warehouse here, dating from the ‘20’s. Long out of use, closed down decades ago, but still standing.
Two high floors, with another partial third story added on on top. The first two floors more like a 3-story building in height, with the great height of the interior ceilings of each.
You can still get up to the roof of the second story, by means of interior staircases. The roof of the second story is like a rooftop garden. Grass and other plants took root long ago in the thin layer of soil that accumulated on it over time. Moss and lichen growing on exposed stone. Young trees that had taken root and grown, though never to any considerable stature. A hanging garden.
It was a favorite spot of Bud’s and his close circle of friends, in their teenage years. They would sneak out of the house at nigh, climb up to their private garden spot, and spend hours there, smoking a little weed, talking and passing time, and looking out over the lights of the city. Watching the late-night freight trains go by on the tracks below, on the other side of the street that ran past the front of it. Their own special place.
I knew, of course, that they drank a little, too. But I didn’t mind. None of it was ever to excess, and they never got in any trouble. They were a fine group of young men, much like Bud himself. He was selective of his friends - had no patience for anyone he considered too childish, or untrustworthy. But when his friendship was given, it was total. And he surrounded himself with other young men of like character. They were all ambitious, as he was, and looking forward to a bright future they all intended to make for themselves. I’ve imagined since that that must have been much of what they talked about in those sultry summer nights, lounging on their high perch above the lesser buildings of that part of town.
I found a nice, fat doobie in a pocket of his jeans once, lol, when going through pockets as I was sorting laundry, getting it ready for the wash.
And, of course, I was waiting for him when he got home later that night:
“What’s this, Bud?”
“Uh-oh……..Where’d you find it?”
“You need to empty your pockets before you put your dirty clothes in the hamper, Pal” I laughed.
I wasn’t mad, and he knew it. It would have been hypocritical of me, in any case. I was doing the same thing when I wasn’t much older than him. Hell, I’d even helped a roommate sell it for a while. He and I had had a great adventure or two in the procurement of what we sold to our fellow Marines.
“…….Can I have it back?”
“Not a chance.”
You know, I’d intended to give it back, after a little time had passed, but I guess I just forgot about it. I found it in a pocket of an old USMC field jacket that I’d kept from years ago, when I’d gotten out. Still sealed in the plastic zippered sandwich bag I’d put it in at that time now several years in the past.
He’d been gone for a while by then. And it brought back memories of that night. When both of us found the situation funny, and neither of us had really minded.
It was dried out and brittle, but still intact. I waited until late that night, and fired it up myself. Smoked it, and thought of him. It was still good.
He’d been 17 or 18 at the time. The year before, he’d come to me with a question. When he was serious about something, I took it seriously, and we’d talk:
“Pop, you and Mom hardly ever spanked us when we were kids. How come?”
“We saw no reason to. You were great kids.”
And that was only the truth. They always had been. We never had any trouble with any of them, even when they were teenagers. They Were great kids to start with, and as they grew older, Momma insisted on giving them a great deal of freedom and latitude, sometimes more than I was strictly comfortable with. But I knew her well by then. Her intelligence and insight. And so I followed her lead.
And a surprising thing happened. With the freedom given, and confidence and trust bestowed, for them to make the right decisions for themselves; they invariably did.
But maybe not so surprising, as I would later think about. I’d seen it before, when I’d had occasion to lead others in a small way. In the Corps, and currently on the FD. Treat men like men. Give them that respect. And they would, with the exception of the occasional bad apple who required a firmer hand, act like men. Let someone know what you expect of them, and that you have confidence in them to do it well, and magic happens. They do. The respect and trust is returned tenfold. Your people perform well. Treat people like children, and they will behave that way, because they resent you not trusting them to be anything else.
Another time when he was 16:
“What am I, Dad?” he’d asked me thoughtfully.
“Whadda you mean?”
“What am I? Am I Hispanic, White, or what?”
“Technically, you’d be considered Hispanic. Why? What did you think you were?”
“I never really thought about it before. I’ve always just been me.”
I though that high wisdom at the time, from one so young. But he was a thinker - liked to try to figure out the meaning of things.
“Then you just go on being you, and you won’t go wrong.”
Something Momma and I had talked about with all of our children: “Always be yourself. Be true to yourself. Don’t ever go along with a group just to fit in. Think for yourselves.”
A lesson I’d learned from others who’d taken the time to teach Me when I was coming up. One an unreformed hippy who’d been a teacher of mine in High School, whom the school authorities finally gave up on trying to force him to adhere to established dress code or grooming standards, lol.
With the unusual last name of “Friend.” But fitting, for he was more than just a teacher. He Was one. Parts of his classroom teaching were things other than History that he thought it important for we his charges to know:
“One of the best things you can ever do for your yourselves is to never go along with the crowd just to fit in. Whatever you do, think for YouSelves, dude and dudettes. Make your Own decisions.”
Another time: “Don’t blindly trust Authority just because they Are Authority. They’re not always right.”
Thug finally did get that guy to wear a tie, lol. But quickly became so appalled at the outlandish ties he Did west that the requirement was thereafter dropped from the dress code, lol.
But he flat Refused to cut the long hair that hung down his back, lol. His reasoning (correctly) was that the rules stated that it must be clean and well-groomed, which it was. They said nothing whatsoever about length, lol. Hard to use your own rules against a guy who’s smarter than you are, who’s more of a smartass than you can ever hope to be, and who Knows your own rules better than you do.

2023.06.01 11:56 express_infinity Yes - non-residents still CAN get a L-visa at Hong Kong
Given recent
questions as well as
success stories in Macau, I wanted to write about my experience successfully getting an L-visa through the visa application centre in Hong Kong as an Australian citizen.
This contrasts to Chinese embassies in multiple Balkan countries which would not accept my application as a non-citizen or non-resident.
Applied for: 30 day single entry L-visa. Just wanted to do some travel there before I head home.
What I needed:
-Original passport
-Photocopy of passport information page
-Passport size photo - yes, you need a physical copy as well, even though you submit one online. I had to take another one at the photobooth
-Hong Kong landing slip (they give you this at the airport)
-Photocopy of HK landing slip (I didn't have this so they sent me to the photocopier)
-Train reservation HK to Beijing via trip.com
-Hostel reservation in Beijing 14 nights
-Flight reservation Beijing to Tokyo via ANA
-Completed application form matching the itinerary above
-Appointment confirmation
Process - application 1. Completed application form online 2. Booked appointment online 3. Arrived at application centre 10 mins before my slot 4. At slot was taken to wait for pre-check in another line (backlog from previous slots) 5. Pre-check: staff member checked I had all documents, sent me away to get what was missing (physical, passport-sized photo, photocopy of HK landing slip). Eventually gave me number to wait for main counter. 6. Main counter: Documents checked very thoroughly page by page, fingerprints taken, documents including passport and landing slip taken and bundled up. Found error in my application form and asked me to correct in pen (wrong passport expiry date - yes that is how thoroughly they check). Told me cost. Gave me number to wait for cashier. 7. Cashier: Took money. Told me pick up time. Only cash or HK FPS is accepted. You can find an ATM while you wait.
Total time: Approx 2.5 hours
Turnaround time (express): 2 working days.
Apply in afternoon, pick up in afternoon 2 days later.
Fees: HK$550 for 30 day single-entry L visa
Plus HK$390 extra for express processing
Notes:
-The centre has photocopiers, photobooths, WiFi, and I think public computers too. Pretty crowded place.
-The photocopiers only take Octopus card (HK$10/sheet) and the photobooths only take cash ($HK90 - $10/20/50 bills only, no change). The WiFi is free.
-They didn't mind a train ticket from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Beijing (rather than an air ticket). This is 95% refundable if you book more than 8 days in advance.
-They didn't mind that my Trip.com train ticket was "Reservation successful. Awaiting ticket sale" only (I couldn't book a confirmed ticket that far in advance)
-They didn't mind that my outbound ticket was to a third country (Japan) rather than HK
-My passport didn't have any Turkish stamps. However someone I talked to was in Turkey for one month, they noticed the stamps and looked very suspicious and asked him to explain why he was there. In the end he withdrew his application for separate reasons.
-The same guy had a multi-stop itinerary. They wanted hotel accommodation for every stop. They also wanted a train ticket for one particular inter-China journey but not any others, he didn't get a clear reason why.
-My passport was more than 5 years old so idk if you need to give them your old passports too if you passport is newer
-I had never been to China before so idk if you need to give them your old visas
-Didn't apply for a double-entry or longer visa so idk if you can get it
-They do hold your passport and landing slip while they process your visa
-I cancelled all my reservations after I received my visa and will be going to China on different dates
LMK any questions and I'll try to answer

2023.06.01 11:56 SourcerBot China’s 11.6m graduates face a jobs market with no jobs
Here is the most important information, and related articles, from

Save 4 minutes of reading with this summary: But after working at a Korean supermarket in Brisbane for several months after graduating, in February she decided to return to her home city of Kunming, in the south-west province of Yunnan, to find a job as an English teacher. That eased the homework burden for schoolchildren but torpedoed jobs for young graduates, including Xie, who had previously looked at tutoring as a way of getting teaching experience. Eric Fish, the author of a book about Chinese millennials, says the value of an international degree has diminished in China’s jobs markets. In April it published details of a set of policies designed to stimulate the jobs market, including subsidies for companies that hire unemployed university graduates. The government wants state-owned enterprises to recruit 1 million trainees in 2023, and has set an overall target of creating 12m urban jobs this year, up from 11m in 2022.

2023.06.01 11:36 Amazing-Valuable7572 [FO] First half stitch finished. Mary Ardens House. Very happy but so tiny! Never again 🤣.
| Kit I found in a charity shop (as usual). It's my first half stitch. Are they all this small?? Most done with my magnifying light. Or maybe it's just my eyes 🤣. The fact it says petit pont kit should have been a clue 🤔. Super happy with results though. My MIL works at Ann Hathaways Cottage (Shakespeares wife) and so I have done this for her 75th Birthday. (Mary Arden was Shakespeares mother). Frame also from a charity shop. How lucky to get this mount in right size and goes well!. Pen in FO picture for idea of scale. 2023.06.01 11:25 JohnsonMooney Connemarathon HM 23/04/2023
M, 33, 73kg Result: 01:26:xx
A: 1:29:59 B: 1:31:59 C: 1:34:59
Background: I've a decent background playing sports since I was kid, and competed in athletics/track up until my late teens in long sprints (400-800m) as I preferred the training despite always having a tendency to do better aerobically in training. I generally kept in shape during my 20s, and had a few spells of getting back in competitive shape for 400m, but always ended up getting injured which would put me out for months at a time and going back to square one. I have a tendency to over-do things which probably contributed to that cycle in hindsight!
During covid I started getting into distance running consistently as a way to spend time outside, but again was hit by the typical new distance runner injuries a few months in from doing too much too soon. Shin splints, and achilles tendinopathy x2. I do not recommend either! I ran a few 5k Park Runs when that became possible and got into the low 19min range fairly quickly before injury hit again.
So, starting from scratch again last October after the better part of 2 years of an incredibly frustrating training->injury->back-to-square-one cycle, this time around I have been very careful about pacing and recovery and lo and behold that's resulted in my longest stretch of injury-free training in years. Funny that, eh?
My training in the lead up to my first ever HM was 90% easy running with a focus on increasing volume towards a target of a trail Ultra (46km) in June (this coming weekend!!) I deliberately avoided doing much in the way of tempo/intervals and just added strides once a week as a way to keep in touch with true speed. The HM was a nice mini-target a few months into my training to see where I was at. Given I had barely done any work at speed I had no idea what I was capable of over HM, and especially given the course was famously hilly (c 250m elevation gain) but having done a 5km on a tough course a few weeks before in 19:25, I decided to have a crack at sub 90 but wasn't very confident I would get it. Volume was up to 50-70km depending on the week, with 5-6.5hrs time on feet and running on 5 or 6 days.
Pre-race: The race itself was fantastic, with an unbelievably scenic route and extremely well organised with shuttle buses to the start in the tiny village of Leenane from a few pre-appointed parking areas. The weather was extremely good for the West of Ireland in April, with clear skies and temps up to 16°C+ in the sun.
I lined up towards the front with the 1:30 pacers and asked what their pacing plan was, as I had pre-loaded targets for a slight neg split on my watch to try avoid blowing up too much. They said they were planning on banking some time in the first half as the route had a big hill from 16-18.5km and would definitely slow people. I'm glad I made the call on the spot to go with them as it turned out to be a good decision. Atmosphere was very positive at the start line, and I felt a good sense of conraderie that I'd never experieneced in my years running track.
The Race: The start gun went boom-boom, we were underway, and about 30 athletes took off ahead of my pace group as we navigated the short downhill through the village before turning left into a decently long climb out of Leenane and into the wilds of Connemara. I felt like I was working to keep up in the first couple k's but HR was OK and I stayed with it.
3-5k's in and I was feeling much better, up at the front of the pace group and in control as we rolled through undulating short climbs and downhills into the middle section of the race. There was plenty of encouragement from the two pacers and we had a nice group of 10-15 working together.
5-10k and I was feeling great. I took at gel at 30mins in with one spare for the hour mark. I noticed I was taking time out of everyone else on the downhills, something I had been working on in my training but it was good to see it in action without any effort.
Around the halfway point the group was down to 3 plus the lead pacer and we were 3mins ahead of target. The pacer at this point dropped back to try help some of the others who needed more help and the three of us started working together. There were some lovely views during the third quarter of the course and I made sure to take on water at the aid stations. Soon it was just me and one other dude working together, we were both feeling strong and we had started picking off people who were struggling to stay with their early pace. It was around this point I made the mistake of not taking my second gel as I was feeling great and I decided I didn't need it.
At around 16k we hit the big daddy climb and it did not disappoint! I was starting to work harder and the pace dropped a little but we were still well under target pace. I was confident now that I was going to smash my targets. 17k, still climbing and we passed a photographer on the road. I knew he picked that spot because of the stunning views but I doubt if many runners were looking their best at that point in the race, least of all me. Nevertheless, onwards and upwards, still passing runners. Then all of a sudden, just as we were about to crest the peak I felt a twang in my right hammer and then a full blown cramp. Shot by a sniper. Sht sht, double-sh*t!! I pulled up, let my comrade go and stretched it out. I don't know how much time I was stopped for but it must have been at least 30s before I shuffled tentatively onwards, adjusting my stride to a flat or kind of heel-strike motion to change up the firing pattern on my stricken hammer. Thankfully I was soon over the top of the hill and was able to cruise into the long downhill before the final 2.5km flat to the finish-line at Maam Cross.
Luckily that was the end of the cramping and I managed to not get passed by any of the runners I had previously overtaken, in fact I finished strong and passed a couple more runners, while being cheered on by a few groups of people on the roadside. Once I had the finish line in sight I pushed as much as I had left and saw the clock just hit 1:26 as I approached, elated.
Official finish time low 1:26 and inside the top 15 finishers in a field of over 1000, which I was absolutely over the moon with. Absolutely smashed it. I got chatting to the guy who I'd run with up until the cramp and he'd done sub 3 in the marathon before but had gone conservative here due to the hilly course. He was training for sub 2:50 in October so I took a lot of encouragement from being able to hang with him for so long.
Overall it was a fantastic experience for me and a race I will 100% return to.
Post-race and next steps: Next up for me is my A-race Ultra (well, mini-ultra). My training has been fairly consistent since this HM at the end of April but if anything my average volume has gone down a little. Despite that, I'm feeling very positive heading into the weekend and don't have any running commitments immediately afterwards. The immediate focus will be some down time before I pick the training up again in the second half of July and probably work towards a sub 80 HM. I think I have it in me to bridge that gap but will require some more dedicated training at goal paces.
Thanks to anyone who read this far, it ended up being a bit of a monster!
