I've seen a couple posts on here in the last month about what people think of Neil's voice. A lot of people say they like it, it makes them feel something.
But that doesn't really explain his unique singing style. No up and coming singer that wants to make it big is going to sound like that nowadays. Hell, his singing on Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing or Man Needs a Maid is actually pretty good. As his career went on, his singing started to sound a little more simplistic, and perhaps a bit more polarizing .
Why did he make this choice? Neil Young started playing with The Squires, which played at small shows and dances. It was heavily surf influenced and especially by The Shadows. If ever you've wondered why Neil plays in guitar in such a unique way, go and listen to Santa Ana by The Shadows and then Cowgirl or Down By the River.
Then he got involved in the folk scene in Canada. He reflects on it in some of his songs.
Back in the old folky days, The air was magic when we played, The riverboat was rockin' in the rain, Midnight was the time for the raid - Opening of Ambulance Blues
This is where he finally came into his own, and felt free. Who was playing in these clubs? Folk singers, who were often also brilliant at improvisational guitar.
All these big folk artists, Neil, Bob Dylan, Joni, Joan Baez, Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot - none of them have traditionally strong pop voices. None of them even try to.
Let's go over to the the UK and Ireland where this music tradition originates. Look at someone singing old folk songs like Mary Black. Notice anything? The style of traditional folk music in the UK and Ireland is just what Joni and Joan Baez are doing. They have unique voices for 'pop' music, but it's just that standard traditional style of singing.
Looking at Neil specifically; This song by Archie Fisher was released in 76, but he had music published before Neil became famous. It's written very similarly to how Neil writes a song, and the lyrics are eerily similar to Neil's stuff, like Captain Kennedy.
Neil's voice isn't strange, he's a folk singer. I think some people forget that sometimes. It's a niche tradition that blew up massively in the early-mid 70s in particular. The entire point of the music he's playing is that the voice is intentionally unusual. The folk ethos is that you are a haggard, wandering everyman. You aren't special trained musician, you are going town to town telling your stories. This type of music wasn't really meant for the masses, but it ended up being this way. People aren't going to immediately connect and go 'Oh yeah, Old Man, clearly inspired by hundreds of years of English folk music tradition' when they hear it on the radio.
There's an interesting parallel between this and the Grunge movement. Grunge appeared organically in a local scene, where everyone knew each other. The singers ALL had the same unique characteristics and similarly dark lyrical content. They dressed in very simple clothes.
Then the 90s hit, and the big labels and media use the movement for commercial purposes. It's darker music, deep lyrics, relatable (and uber talented) musicians were used as a contrast to the more upbeat, over the top music that had been popular. Eventually though, it got so overcommercialised, and people started turning to drugs and dying. Is what happened to Neil after Harvest not what happened to Nirvana after Nevermind or Alice in Chains after Dirt? I just think it's an interesting parallel.
