What are your thoughts on dirty fasting?
2023.06.01 13:16 zarathustra1313 What are your thoughts on dirty fasting?
Hey guys. I’ve always been into fitness and am fairly healthy. Nonetheless around Christmas 2022 I decided to track calories and macros to see what my habits where (something I did in university) I realized IF a few times a week + 36 hour fast every 10 days or so made it waaayy easier to keep in my macro averages.
Am m34 6’1” and went from 220lbs then to 190lbs now! Great results. Close to being the leanest I’ve been in a decade!
Anyways here’s my question: for 36 and 72 hour fasts is mild cheating/dirty fasting OK?
Sometimes I’ll have a few nuts for good fats, cream in my coffee, a piece of celery or like a single bite of the dinner my wife made. I feel if it’s 500 cals or less I’m still getting benefits from the fast. Thoughts?

2023.06.01 13:13 Fxguy1 Getting an entry level software development job as a career changer?
TL/DR: I am looking to secure a work-from-home programmer part-time after being a pharmacist and substitute teacher. I have completed a certificate in programming and database management from Parkland College (including Web Dev, Database dev, C/C++, Python, and PHP / SQL) but have not applied nor worked in software development.
Long Story
I am currently unemployed and have had a bit of a rocky history since 2019. Prior to 2019 I was a pharmacist for 12 years and worked at only 3 companies. I took some time off then I worked as a substitute teacher (2020-2022) and a very short stint in retail pharmacy (Nov 2022-May 2023).
I was on short-term disability from Feb 2023-May 1st 2023). I was supposed to start with Walgreens part-time but have had to push it back as a result of a back injury. I have an MRI scheduled tomorrow and am looking at either a steroid spinal injection or outpatient surgery for a herniated disk. My back should be better soon and so not an issue.
Financially I need to return to work. I really do not want to start with Walgreens and would really like to get something where I can work from home part-time (or full-time if a good fit) working as a programmer.
I have a certificate in general programming and database management from the local college. I am very familiar with programming theory (algorithms, data structures, loops, functions, etc.). I have a working knowledge/passing ability with Java, Python, and C++. I have built front-end websites (so working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and XHTML) and backend (PHP, SQL).
Since I haven't worked with programming daily I would need to brush up on whatever language is needed or used for the position. I am a fast learner and will pick things up quickly. So what are some things I can do to get that elusive first/entry-level job?

2023.06.01 13:07 rusticgorilla Florida jail officials refuse heart transplant recipient his medication, causing his death; DOJ says Louisiana officers violated law in death of autistic teen

Florida
A 54-year-old Black man died after Florida jail officials refused to give him medication that kept his body from rejecting his heart transplant.
Dexter Barry was arrested for misdemeanor assault in November 2022 after allegedly threatening to beat up a neighbor during an argument over wifi access. No actual physical fight occurred. According to body camera footage reviewed by The Tributary, Barry advised an officer at least seven times that he needed his medication to survive. He was booked into Duval County jail, run by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s office.
The next day, Barry reiterated to a judge that he desperately needed his medication:
“I am on medication,” Barry told the judge. “I just had a heart transplant, and I haven’t taken my medicine all day since I have been locked up, and I take rejection medicines for my heart so my heart won’t reject it, and I’m almost two years out.”
Barry also told jail officials while in police custody; they made note of it, but never gave him the drugs.
The medical records, initially obtained by Jacksonville civil rights attorney Andrew Bonderud, show that Barry also told the jail’s healthcare providers about his medications. Barry only received his blood pressure medicine and a drug for cholesterol and his prostate, according to the medicine log.
Bonderud said he believes the jail not giving Barry his anti-rejection medicine “was entirely driven by profit and a profit motive.” Bonderud, who is representing Barry’s family, explained, “Generic cholesterol medication probably isn’t that expensive. But the heart transplant medicine is very expensive.”
Barry died at home three days after being released, having missed at least five doses of the anti-rejection medication.
Dr. Maya Guglin, an Indiana cardiologist on the board at the American College of Cardiology, said organ transplant recipients have to take anti-rejection medications because their bodies view the new organ as an invasion that must be fought off.
“If you just drop those medications, everyone is eventually going to reject that organ,” she said.
Even if medication is restarted, it will be too late, Guglin said.
South Carolina
A South Carolina man is suing the York County Sheriff’s Office after four deputies shot him nine times during a mental health emergency.
Trevor Mullinax was in his pickup truck on May 7, 2021, with a shotgun. His mother, Tammy Beason, was beside the truck talking to him. A family member called 911 to request a wellness check, reporting that Mullinax was suicidal.
Body camera footage shows the moment that deputies arrived on the scene, opening fire within seconds of leaving their vehicles.
“Prior to arriving at the Plaintiffs’ location, Sheriff’s deputies failed to plan, choosing instead to ride in like cowboys from a John Wayne movie, defaulting to using deadly force, immediately, without attempting to deescalate the situation, in complete disregard for State law/regulation, Sheriff’s policies, and/or County ordinances,” the lawsuit states.
According to court documents, the deputies fired almost 50 rounds at Mullinax, striking him approximately nine times, including in the head. The plaintiffs’ attorneys allege this happened despite Beason being in the line of fire and Mullinax having both his arms raised.
York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson has defended the deputies’ actions, claiming that Mullinax picked up the shotgun in his truck and the officers feared for their lives. Three of the deputies who shot Mullinax are still on duty.
“I tell all of my deputies that their goal is to serve the citizens of York County and then to go home safely to their families. Mr. Mullinax chose to put these men in danger by pulling a shotgun. These deputies responded appropriately to the threat as they were trained to do. Had Mr. Mullinax made different choices that day, deputies would not have been required to use force,” said Sheriff Kevin Tolson. “Our ultimate goal is to ensure the safety of the public and our deputies. Regardless of the outcome of this lawsuit, we want to reassure our residents that we will continue to provide high quality and professional law enforcement service.”
Mullinax survived numerous gunshot wounds, including three to his head. After shooting him, the department charged Mullinax with allegedly pointing a gun at them.
Plaintiff Mullinax, who somehow miraculously survived the horrific shooting, has maintained his innocence of the criminal charges brought by Sheriff’s deputies. Plaintiff Mullinax denies pointing, brandishing, or presenting a firearm in any threating manner at Sheriff’s deputies, and Plaintiff Beason, who was present and standing directly beside the vehicle in plain view of Plaintiff Mullinax, maintains Plaintiff Mullinax did not point, brandish, or present a firearm in any threating manner at Sheriff’s deputies.
Louisiana
The U.S. Justice Department filed a court statement accusing Louisiana officers of violating the civil rights of an autistic boy when deputies pinned him to the ground until he died.
Eric Parsa (referred to as E.P. in court documents), a “severely autistic” 16-year-old, was at a Louisiana laser tag event with his parents on January 19, 2020. As the family was leaving the venue, Parsa “began to experience a sudden sensory outburst” in the parking lot.
E.P. began to slap himself in the head, a behavior which is a common physical trait for many persons on the Severe Autistic Spectrum Disorder and is a readily observable manifestation of the person’s disability and anxiety.
Along with other repetitive motions, this repetitive head slapping is sometimes referred to as type of “stimming” and can be an attempt by the person with autism to calm themselves when confronted with frustration, anxiety and/or inability to communicate. It can also be used by the individual as a self-calming or self-soothing technique to try to avert or mitigate the severity of an outburst or as self-injurious behavior. It is a visible sign that the person may be experiencing or is about to experience an outburst.
During this outburst, Parsa began physically struggling with his dad. The manager of the laser tag venue called the police to report there was “a man with his autistic child…in a confrontation” in the parking lot.
Parsa then slapped the first officer to arrive on scene; he was taken to the ground and handcuffed. Deputies kept Parsa in a prone position on the ground, shackled, using their own body weight as a restraint.
The physical restraint of E.P. in JPSO custody began with a 6’3”, very large, over 300-pound deputy taking E.P. to the ground, striking him and then sitting on E.P.’s back, holding him face down, for approximately seven minutes. Eventually there were a total of seven JPSO deputies involved, sitting on, handcuffing, shackling, holding down, or standing by E.P. as he was restrained and held face down on his stomach against the hard surface of the parking lot. The final application of excessive force against E.P. involved a deputy using his forearm to place a choke/neck hold around E.P.’s head, shoulder and neck, as he lay in a prone position, with a deputy on his back, and other deputies holding down his arms and legs, while he was handcuffed and in leg shackles.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies sat on Parsa for more than nine minutes, only releasing him after “his body had gone limp and he had urinated on himself.”
9 minutes and 6 seconds. This is how long this extremely dangerous, lifethreatening and forceful prone restraint, involving the use of the deputies’ body weight and holds, mechanical restraints, choke/neck hold, following a period of physical exertion, was applied to an unarmed, obese 16-year-old severely autistic child in the midst of a sensory outburst or meltdown.
During that 9 minutes and 6 seconds, there were several clear and distinct opportunities, when E.P. was secured, was calm, was not actively resisting, when the JPSO deputies failed to de-escalate, failed to appropriately reduce the use of force against E.P., and failed to intervene to prevent the use of excessive force by other deputies.
Once E.P. was handcuffed, they did not roll him onto his side. They did not sit him up or stand him up. They did not secure him in a vehicle. They did not continuously monitor him. Instead, they continued to hold him face down, on his belly, while applying unreasonable and excessive force, resulting in his death. It wasn’t until his body had gone limp and he had urinated on himself that the deputies rolled him into “recovery position.” By then it was too late
Parsa was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. His parents filed a lawsuit against the Sheriff’s office, arguing that the deputies violated Parsa’s First, Fourth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendment rights, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Last week, the DOJ filed a statement of interest agreeing with Parsa’s parents:
Here, the record is replete with facts showing that several Defendants knew about E.P.'s disability before or on arrival to the scene and that others learned of his disability during the encounter…Plaintiffs have also put forth evidence that the deputies, who knew they were responding to a call for assistance with a child experiencing a behavioral health crisis, used force inappropriately to respond to a child’s known disability-related behavior…
Critically, nothing in the briefing suggests that E.P. had a weapon, that officers ever reasonably suspected he had a weapon, or that there was a threat to human life… because abundant facts show that Defendants were on notice of E.P.’s disability, a reasonable jury could conclude that Defendants should have reasonably modified their procedures in restraining E.P.

2023.06.01 13:02 AutoModerator /r/snooker for the 2023-24 season
Hello!
Well its been a month since we saw history being made in the Crucible Theatre: Luca Brecel winning his first world title and becoming the first player from Continental Europe (and first player from Belgium) to win the title. The 2022-23 snooker season was chock full of shock results and a changing of the guard in many ways, and the next season doesn't intend to disappoint us at all! Will the fabled "Class of 92" return to winning ways, or has the Covid-19 pandemic itself become the necessary change that snooker may or may not have required for its long term future?
It'll be an interesting season for sure, as the World Snooker Tour will be returning to China as well, the first events to be held in the country since 2019. We already had the Hong Kong Masters last season, which set a record for the largest audience in snooker history, but unfortunately that event is not on the calendar this year, and the fate of the Turkish Masters hangs in the balance as well.
All that aside, lets look back at last season and see what changed for the community:
- We used a new format for all of our tournament discussion threads, where AutoModerator would be the post owner, using a structure that made it easy to repeat over all tournaments and to help keep things fresh. This helped to centrally manage all tournament discussion threads in a long-term sustainable format.
- The World Championship used an experimental form of the above, which was met with "mostly positive" feedback from the community, but which also caused some controversy and also some confusion with established users.
- We also refreshed our visual branding with a brand-new header image across both old and new Reddit, that best encapsulates snooker in the Theatre of Dreams.
- We also brought on some extra moderators to help keep our community inclusive, welcoming and positive for the season ahead.
- The stats showed our community continued to grow, with more messages and users joining us last season than in any previous season.
Based on your feedback shared over the course of the entire season, we're looking forward to the 2023-24 snooker season and want to provide you with transparency about how things will be handled with the Tournament Discussion threads, as well as other minor points that came up during the season.
1.
AutoModerator will continue to be the poster for all Tournament Discussion threads going forward. At the start of last season, our main user who handled all TD threads quit Reddit. This led to a vacuum in relation to who should manage the threads in the future. We trialled using AutoModerator for all threads to provide consistency to the community and we believe this to be a net positive change which removes any kind of "ownership" concerns, as future moderation teams can continue the management of these posts. Therefore, effective immediately, any and all tournament discussion threads (for this season and all future seasons) will be scheduled posts through AutoModerator for the foreseeable future, and they will continue to be "one thread for the whole tournament", with the exception of the World Champs as discussed later.
- No threads will be made for Qualifying rounds, with a specific set of notable exceptions.
Throughout last season, World Snooker Tour used a qualifying round for the vast majority of tournaments. This season, we expect that this will continue and these rounds are often only accessible to users through paywall platforms such as Discovery+, making them inaccessible to the majority of fans. They also don't generate a huge amount of interest from the community anyway, as during actual Qualifying sessions, little community posts were made, except for notable results.
Therefore, with that in mind, and as World Snooker Tour have decided they will continue with the Qualifying rounds format in subsequent season,
official discussion threads for Qualifying rounds will not be made going forward (for this season or any other season), but we encourage the community to make new posts as required for any notable results or matches that people might feel they should watch or need to know about.
Two specific tournaments are exempted from this rule: those being the UK Championship and the World Championship. These two events are given more notability by World Snooker Tour, as well as more "meaningful" coverage that is also available for free, so it is reasonable to give them more attention on the sub than other events.
- No threads will be made for the Championship League.
These tournaments are generally played behind closed doors and get little televised coverage. Since a large portion of the community is based in either the UK or Europe, where access to the events is limited to one stream on YouTube [which lacks commentary] and one stream on Facebook [which does have commentary], and these events have typically generated little interest due to their unique format, we don't think its in the best interests to provide a thread for discussion threads for either version of the Championship League, but -- like Qualifying rounds above -- you're more than welcome to post a new thread for notable results that you've seen mentioned on social media.
- The televised rounds of the World Championship will use an updated thread format for this season.
Last season, we trialled an unusual format whereby Round One matches were in one thread, Round 2/Quarter Finals matches were split into two threads [one per table], Semi-Finals were covered in one thread and the Final was given a thread to itself.
Our intention was to make things more intuitive to navigate and to reduce the potential for spoilers, as people may be watching one match but not the other and end up being spoiled. However, feedback during the event showed that while many appreciated the format of the threads, others did not and it led to confusion, as people did not know what Table One or Table Two referred to.
We want to make these threads for the event easy to use: the World Championship is our premier event on the calendar and draws a lot more activity than any other event on the calendar, which means we want to make sure that everyone can use them. Across all of the threads for the World Championship, they amassed well over 17,500 comments alone. If we put all those comments into just one thread, they would be an extremely painful experience, not only for us moderators having to remove bad comments, but also for you trying to read the thread (as well as loading said thread!)
With this in mind, and based on your feedback, we are going to use a different format for these threads this season: again, like last season, your feedback will help us to shape a format that works for you but also makes it easier for us to moderate over the tournament. The new format will involve
each individual round being given
its own thread: no separation will be used for each table, as the designation was deemed confusing and unnecessary.
- The sticky post for matches to be played on each day will continue, but with some specific exceptions
Along with the use of AutoModerator for owning the discussion threads themselves, we also provided a sticky post which detailed matches to be played per day for each stipulated session of that day, as well as other notable information relating to each session [eg matches cancelled because a player withdrew]. We believe that this information can be useful for fans, even if it is duplication of information provided by World Snooker Tour, so this will continue for all threads as required.
However, this information will
not be provided for those tournaments played in Asia. This is because of timezone reasons, and matches will be played at times when most of the moderators will not actually be able to check what matches are being played and on what table. For those events, the sticky post will just detail some useful information not covered by the OP, if any: otherwise, no sticky post will be given.
- The rule regarding "don't post threads with spoilers in the title" will be reviewed.
This has become a point of contention recently, as Reddit has made several changes that mostly make the rule redundant. However, we appreciate that a thread containing a spoiler can still be disruptive as not everyone will be aware of these features, or may not be using a version of Reddit where they exist. With that in mind, our moderators will be reviewing the specific rule and see if it needs to be tweaked or removed. We will provide updated information on this later in the year [but before the Champion of Champions commences]
Okay, long post over with! While the professional tour is taking a well-earned break, Q School is well underway to see who is joining (or rejoining) the tour. Let's all congregate again when the 2023-24 season recommences and enjoy the time to relax! :)
With regards,
-

2023.06.01 12:52 Aaron_OBODA Scoliosis left unattended for 7 years.
Hi! I would like to share and get advice for what I've been noticing these past month. To begin I was diagnosed with Scoliosis in 2011 it was just 25+ degrees upper part of the spine from what I remember, Fast forward around July 2015 my X-Ray result revealed the upper part was now around 42 degrees and my lower part of the spine near pelvic has curve too but the doctor was too lazy to measure it and just pointed it out like it's casual. It was significantly tilted to be honest but I don't know why the doctor only focused on the upper spine curve. Today I've been having frequent lower back pain while sitting and moving around in some positions. The pain is in the spine area in the middle of my lower back. The weird thing I found out that my height decreased from 5'11 to 5'9 in just 8 months. But from what I've recall last month I measured my height was still 5'11 and this Tuesday morning I'm only 5'9. How on earth would someone shrink that fast? I started to also have fatigue. I can move around for 2 hours max and then I feel like not able to control/move my body normally, My lower back is numb aching, arms are hard to lift and my feet feels really heavy I trip a lot. I feel like laying on the bed and can't go on.
In 2011, I was 13 years old, got body brace but the doctor said I no longer need to wear them after 2 years. I can't sleep and be human wearing those, It presses the soul out of me and heavy as well.
In 2015 , I was 17, stopped wearing brace at 15. I also remember I was 5'11 at the age of 17.
Around October 2022 I still measured 5'11. I didn't grow a inch in age 17-21?
Today My height is just 5'9, lost 2 inches and lost 5KG in 6 months without even trying. What's happening to me?
Thank you in advance for advices.

2023.06.01 12:35 SrijanK Deep Dive: IBM and Hedera
| Over the past several weeks, I have tried to research IBM’s involvement in the Hedera ecosystem, especially their focus on the Hedera Consensus Service and how Hedera fits into the Hyperledger Fabric mechanism, which seems to be what the IBM Blockchain Platform uses for its blockchain use cases. I would like to share my findings below: Timeline: - IBM was the lead investor in Hedera Hashgraph's first funding round in February 2018.
- Hedera Consensus Service was announced in June 2019. This whitepaper was co-authored by IBM.
- IBM joins the Hedera Governing Council in August 2019.
- Hedera Consensus Service launched on Mainnet in February 2020.
IBM's foray into Blockchain From Bryan Gross' presentation on the Hedera Consensus Service: IBM blockchain started in mid 2015 when clients really began asking us our opinion on blockchain and whether or not they should get involved in it. So, we did some exploratory work and got really excited about it but unfortunately we were not able to find a distributed ledger technology that was compatible with the requirements of business - things like privacy and confidentiality, and that led us to start prototyping something that became known as the Open Blockchain and we donated the code development resource and intellectual property to the Linux Foundation, and this ultimately became the Hyperledger project in early 2016. This early adoption and insight into blockchain by IBM has helped us become the recognized leader in blockchain for business. Don Thibeau, who was on Offering Manager at IBM Blockchain prior to joining Hedera in August 2018, mentions the following in a podcast from November 2022: At IBM, my primary focus was an open-source project called Hyperledger Fabric, which helped to build permissioned networks for those different use cases, and of course, the IBM blockchain platform, which helped to make that available as a service. When I joined Hedera, we made that pitch back to IBM and said, "Look at Hedera as a platform for enabling your access to public networks, while still delivering an enterprise scale of technology." And that's one that I think IBM has greatly benefited from in the years since they joined as a council member. IBM joins the Hedera Governing Council At the time of joining the council, IBM said it is most interested in how the public network interacts with private networks. As per Bryan Gross from IBM (for some background, Bryan co-authored the HCS whitepaper, served as the IBM representative on the Hedera GC from IBM's joining until June 2020 when he quit IBM. He subsequently also served as an advisor to Hedera Hashgraph from June 2020 to Feb 2021), The most exciting part is the proposed Hedera Consensus Service. It has the potential to provide the core innovation of proof-of-work blockchains, like bitcoin and ethereum, without the performance and privacy trade-offs that are typically associated with these networks. Since the Hedera Hashgraph is designed to unify public and private networks, IBM will use it to build trust in custom Hyperledger Fabric networks. Hedera Consensus Service makes it possible for Hyperledger projects out there to use the service to put transactions in order and eliminate the need for them to stand up nodes for transaction ordering, and they get the trust model of a public network,” Harmon said. [ Source] From Hedera’s press release announcing IBM's entry into the council, Jerry Cuomo, Vice President of Blockchain Technologies at IBM, said: We are excited to join the Hedera Governing Council and explore relationships between public networks and industry-specific networks. Hyperledger has proven to be the de facto standard enterprises use to build, manage, and deploy blockchain-based ledgers. We believe Hedera could help provide an interesting way to enhance and simplify the deployment of Hyperledger Fabric in the enterprise, making it easier for groups to build and grow their networks. As a sidenote, all 9 of IBM’s representative to the Hedera Governing Council have been top executives within the IBM Blockchain Platform, clearly indicating the level of IBM's involvement into Hedera: - Bryan Gross, Principal Product Manager at IBM Blockchain
- Jules Miller, Partner, IBM Blockchain Ventures
- Gari Singh, CTO IBM Blockchain
- Andy Carelli, Director, Blockchain Platform
- Porter Stowell, Head of Product Management at IBM Blockchain
- Anthony Day, Consulting Partner at IBM Blockchain
- Paul Tippett, Head of Operations, IBM Blockchain
- Bhargav Perepa, Blockchain Technical Adviso Specialist
- Shyam Nagarajan, Executive Partner, Blockchain and Web 3.0
What is Hedera Consensus Service? While we discuss IBM’s role and use of Hedera, it is critical to understand the Hedera Consensus Service, which, as can be seen above, has always been the focal point of IBM’s involvement. Hedera Consensus Service (HCS) is a purpose-built tool for creating decentralized, auditable logs of immutable and timestamped events for web2 and web3 applications. Messages are submitted to the Hedera network for consensus, given a trusted timestamp, and fairly ordered. HCS is used by applications in production to track provenance across supply chains, log asset transfers between blockchain networks, count votes in a DAO, monitor IoT devices, and more. Hedera is the first public distributed ledger that allows developers to build their own application networks (appnet), a set of computers which enable privacy but utilize the trust of Hedera’s public ledger as their consensus engine. This service takes full advantage of hashgraph’s high-throughput for speed and asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance for security. Hedera Consensus Service can be used standalone or as a decentralized ordering service with other ledgers, such as Hyperledger Fabric, Corda, or Ethereum. IBM formalizes the HCS Model From Hedera's blog piece announcing the IBM Blockchain Platform Tech Preview - A leader in permissioned networks, original co-author of the Hedera Consensus Service whitepaper, and current Hedera Governing Council member, IBM, wants to formalize this model. To do so, they've announced the IBM Blockchain Tech Preview with Hedera Consensus Service. From the Tech Preview, IBM mentions the following: The importance of the ecosystem is what led us to join the Hedera Governing Council for Hedera Hashgraph back in 2019. Since we began our relationship with Hedera, they have done nothing but deliver valuable innovations that support and enhance capabilities within the enterprise blockchain space. With Hedera Consensus Service, Hedera provides an immutable, decentralized, and ordered log of every transaction. Enterprises, regulators, and end-users can be more comfortable about their privacy, while still enabling the decentralized trust required for their application. IBM Blockchain Platform and Hedera are blending the world of private and public ledgers. From Leemon's video introducing HCS, co-presented by Bryan Gross from IBM, Leemon mentions that using Hyperledger Fabric with Hedera's Consensus Service allows you to have the privacy of a Hyperledger private network, and the trust of the Hedera Network. This hybrid architecture takes advantage of a more decentralized network while still preserving the privacy of its participants and their transactions. The Tech Preview was an overview explaining how two separate offerings 1) the IBM Blockchain Platform and 2) the Hedera Consensus Service can work together at the application layer to support a Private Blockchain Network based on Hyperledger Fabric with decentralized ordering provided by the Hedera Consensus Service plug-in. Ultimately, the Tech Preview is a blockchain use case with enhanced auditability and public trust - putting to use the decentralized and verifiable events of Hedera Hashgraph while preserving transaction privacy within IBM Blockchain Platform. [ Source] https://preview.redd.it/0rc2umaivd3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=0837f00553907c3b22f50e5de617d9c6d33b0a50 Why does IBM Blockchain Platform need the Hedera Consensus Service? From Bryan Gross’ presentation on Introduction to Hedera Consensus Service: IBM blockchain platform is powered by hyperledger fabric, but Hyperledger fabric is a framework or a toolkit but it's not a running network like Hedera.. and so in order to get value from a Hyperledger fabric Network, a network operator must deploy nodes start or join a network and install and substantiate chain code. In this process, the network operator relies on three fabric components because fabric is really built in this modular way where you can swap in and out these different components to meet your use case. - The first component is a certificate authority that identifies organizations that participate in the network.
- The second component is a peer which can represent your organization on the network, this peer can endorse transactions and run the network but
- The third service which is the one that's most interesting today is the ordering service and this service is the one that determines the fair order of transactions. The ordering service can take some more time to understand as it adds some complexity in deploying with challenges such as who's going to run the ordering service, how many nodes will be needed to operate efficiently, which consensus algorithms will back the order of transaction processing, etc. There are real performance and cost implications to these decisions and as a result, Hyperledger Fabric currently has three options for ordering:
- Solo - Easy to set up, high speed and cost-friendly. Not crash-tolerant.
- Kafka - Crash Tolerant, but not BFT, needs additional dependencies.
- Raft - Crash Fault Tolerant, but not BFT. No additional dependencies needed. Raft follows a “leader and follower” model, where a leader node is elected (per channel) and its decisions are replicated by the followers.
Today, we are enabling yet another option through this partnership with Hedera, where network operators can access fair message ordering by 39 major companies without going through the effort and expense of deploying five RAF nodes or forming a consortium of running their own nodes is potentially something of value. Hyperledger Fabric Interoperability The Hedera Consensus Service proof-of-concept use case is providing custom Hyperledger Fabric networks with decentralized consensus on the validity and order of blockchain transactions without the need to configure a RAFT or Kafka ordering service. The Hedera Consensus Service will make a global, fault tolerant, and cost-effective ordering service available to any Hyperledger Fabric network built today. The Hedera Consensus Service provides any Fabric network the ability to order transactions with high throughput using a global network of nodes that do not need to be operated or individually trusted by the members of the Fabric network. This will reduce operational cost of Fabric-based solutions, improve resiliency to data center outages, and alleviate the need to determine who operates private Fabric ordering services per network. The Hedera Consensus Service reduces the cost of operating private networks, enables both privacy and scalability, and improves the trust model over both private ledgers and centralized servers. TL;D Conclusion Based on all the above, IBM seems to be fully invested in the Hedera ecosystem, more so with the Hedera Consensus Service which forms a key offering in its Blockchain Platform. Hedera's role in these architectures by IBM is simple. With Hedera Consensus Service, Hedera is providing an immutable, decentralized, and ordered log of every transaction. Enterprises, regulators, and end-users can be more comfortable about their privacy, while still enabling the decentralized trust required for their application. IBM Blockchain Platform and Hedera are blending the world of private and public ledgers. submitted by SrijanK to Hedera [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 12:33 autotldr Amazon’s main UK division pays no corporation tax for second year in a row Amazon The Guardian
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 73%. (I'm a bot)
Amazon's main UK division has paid no corporation tax for the second year in a row after benefiting from tax credits on a chunk of its £1.6bn of investment in infrastructure, including robotic equipment at its warehouses.
Amazon UK Services, which employs more than half of the group's UK workers, received a tax credit of £7.7m in the year to the end of December, according to accounts filed at Companies House, advance details of which were shared by Amazon with the Guardian.
It is understood that as a result, Amazon's main UK division paid no corporation tax but other parts of the group's UK business did pay an undisclosed amount.
Pretax profits at the main division rose about 9% to almost £222m in 2022 as sales rose by nearly 8% to £6.56bn. Paul Monaghan, the chief executive of the Fair Tax Foundation, criticised Amazon for failing to disclose its total profits in the UK and the corporation tax paid on that despite calls for more transparency from tax justice campaigners and shareholders.
An Amazon spokesperson said: "Amazon UK Services is only a small part of our business, and when you look across all our UK companies we paid corporation tax last year.
The UK tax credit at Amazon UK Services was part of €937m of tax credits across Europe last year, according to accounts for the group's Luxembourg-based retail division published in March, after just over €1bn of benefits the year before.

2023.06.01 12:31 WeronikaJ Egosoft x Huqiao - case study from the Chinese market
| If you are interested in how marketing games on the Chinese social media looks like then check our most recent case study. It describes our work on the X series with Egosoft, one of the oldest independent studios in Germany. “We make space games.” It’s certainly one way to describe over 25 years of constant work on the X series - popular space simulators, allowing players to freely explore the ever-expanding universe. What could be a next step for such a well-recognizable studio? The answer is simple - reaching even a wider audience. This is when the Chinese market comes into play. https://preview.redd.it/7mzynfl0ud3b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=5dbfc34aacfd261de2407529242171c3e4d3dad9 - BACKGROUND
Despite 8% of their global sales coming from China, there was a lack of communication towards Chinese gamers, which presented a significant potential for growth. We saw a lot of opportunities since the X4 series has already attracted a wide community. There were hundreds of videos with high engagement rate and an existing modding scene. Our cooperation started in November, with a kick-off meeting taking place on 7.11.22. At the beginning of our work, X4 was quite popular in its genre, but not known to the wider audience. As the series has a high entry level, the players were mostly hardcore fans. Our cooperation was aimed at increasing brand awareness and promoting the X4 series to the Chinese gaming community. “We come to Heybox to get closer to the X-series fans, and welcome new astronauts to try out the latest \"X4\"!” 2. OUR SOLUTIONS In order to achieve that, we were responsible for: - Content creation and localisation
You cannot enter Chinese social media without content in Chinese. Besides creating posts, we also took care of localizing announcements and existing videos - for example, the official trailer for the game. The results speak for themselves - in only 72 hours after launch, the trailer reached 17k views without any paid promotion. We managed to organically gain 497 followers, 390 likes, 54 shares and 174 comments - with many expressing excitement for future content. It was the first video published on Egosoft’s Bilibili channel, aimed at an entirely new audience - with no prior contact before that. Watch the full trailer here! - Distribution on Bilibili & Heybox
Registration of the official accounts on Chinese social media is an important step in a long term strategy for the market. The process itself wasn’t as smooth as we hoped - getting the official certification took longer than expected. Fortunately, we managed to go through it, allowing us to distribute our content. We created an influencer database and conducted outreach with a goal of establishing relationships with Chinese content creators. The most prominent result of this cooperation was 1 hour long video published by 机械天团 - channel with 89k fans. It was definitely one of our records on Bilibili - right now, it has 51 thousand views, and it has reached 1979 likes and 307 comments. 机械天团 (Mechanical Sky Team) spent hundreds of hours playing the series and created a tutorial for new players, allowing them to enter and explore the secrets of X4 universe. The popularity of the video was a good indication of the value they had for other players. As the series can present serious challenges for newcomers, 机械天团 guide helped them to make first steps in its vast world. Looking at the comments, the video achieved this purpose. Many people praised the creators and the game (“this is so much fun!”) and thanked them for their content. https://preview.redd.it/8av6tnxnud3b1.png?width=1377&format=png&auto=webp&s=11b5bc195caa949c0172a54374c5abb9863fea12 - PR Outreach to Chinese news outlets & bloggers
As a part of our agreement, we also took care of establishing contact with Chinese news outlets. We also distributed game keys during the Taipei Game Show in February, working on relationships with influencers and media. - Community management on Chinese social media
As there was no previous engagement with Chinese players, showing them that t he developer cares about them and is there to stay was key. In order to achieve that, we were sure to address their comments, and feature content that attracted new players (key giveaways) and catered to the existing ones (ask me anything post). The most prominent piece we were responsible for was the interview created specifically for the Chinese gamers. It’s definitely something we are the most proud of. One of our team members, Aleksander Ptak, gathered the community's questions and during a 30-minute long video asked them to Egosoft’s founder, Bernd Lehahn. Bernd explained in detail his motivations behind creating and developing the X-series universe. The main idea was to grant players the opportunity to be what they want and freedom in leading their journey in the virtual universe, making the games more accessible to a wider audience. The players from China had a unique opportunity to learn that it was Hong Kong and its neon-lit cityscape was a big inspiration to the studio. You can watch the full interview on Egosoft’s Bilibili channel. 3. OUR RESULTS Between September 2022 to April 2023, the number of players on Heybox grew from 20k to 30k, and the rating has risen from 7.6 to 7.9. You can see the comparison below: https://preview.redd.it/ek0ew8fqud3b1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=b68ea8fe5e285ce4045068541892d668c73dbceb When we started, the average number of players online was 1468. Ever since then, the numbers grew to 4716, with 5,281 in April. https://preview.redd.it/i2ampxnrud3b1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=af42f17e8ed3079750a8c736e2b2c5f1c08a2f69 What’s more, during the premiere of the new DLC the number of simultaneous players in the game grew by +174.8% on Heybox, reaching a record peak: 10,720, up from 7,568 in the past year. https://preview.redd.it/kzqjaoosud3b1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=d559918f41559740780b2e63e125b46533356ff1 5. SUMMARY Building a long-lasting connection with the community is definitely key if you are looking to enter the Chinese gaming market. The reaction to the fourth expansion was a great indication of that. Looking at the huge amounts of comments and enthusiasm among the Chinese players during the last month, we can’t wait to plan for the future and wonder: what else can we do to further increase that interest? This would be a great place to end, but instead we would love to give you a glimpse into Egosoft’s Chinese community. After all, what’s the best place to see the impact of our actions but words of actual players from China? “A good game deserves more attention and hopefully through my tutorial more friends will recognise this magnificent game.” There is no better praise than reading the personal stories of these gamers, taking their time to send the developer some nice words and wishes for the future. “Let's hope Egosoft keeps up the good work and continues to make the best space games in the world!” That’s what we hope too! Huge thank you to the whole Egosoft’s team - it was a real pleasure to be working with you during these past months. Quoting Bernd’s final message from our interview: “It’s great that you guys are now finding our game more and that it is getting more successful in China. I love the country, I love the culture, and it would be really nice to see more of you joining us and becoming more active. Maybe we can soon see each other in the online version, that would be really exciting.” I hope these examples were interesting for you - China is often perceived as a difficult market, so I'm happy to share some of the work we do at Huqiao. If you are a fan of the X4 series, I recommend watching the interview linked above :) And, of course, if you have any further questions related to the Chinese game market - feel free to ask! submitted by WeronikaJ to gamemarketing [link] [comments] |

2023.06.01 12:23 Yamada9511 A one year of The Cycle Frontier journey. Good or Bad?
(A lot of text)So, in practically a month's time, the game will have an
anniversary. On June 22, the game saw patch 1.2.0 and the start of Season 1. Since that time almost a year has passed, and therefore I would like to summarize all of the achievements and innovations that have happened to the game during the year. I will try to take the most important patches for the year and then make a logical conclusion. Let's start
Pre-Season era / June 8 2022
-Releasing a game to the majority of ppl -Adding Reconnect feature(didn't work) -A lot of weapons balancing features(manticore and shotguns were too strong), crates respawns, crashes etc.Overall preparations for releasing of Season 1
Season 1. Era of Trenchgun, Bulldog and Bolty, Cheating issue / June 22
-Releasing of Fortuna Pass. Start of Season 1 -Multiply bug fixes from Pre-Season like dropping out of Ship during Evac-Adjusting matchmaking buckets -A lot of weapon balancing things
July 6 - 1.3.5 -Trenchgun big nerf( Reduced base damage from 80 to 64 ) and buffing of SMGs/other shotguns -Delay between grenades throws ending of grenades spam -Adjusting of weapons Penetration and adjusting of armor numbers at Epic/Exotic
July 20 - 1.3.8 -New Jeff attack witch didn't add him anything other than another useless attack -Adjusting of purple weapons leading to their domination in the meta. Such weapons like KOR or Voltanic become playable -Anticheat improvements
August 17 - 1.5.0 -Adding of Victim Compensation(refunding for killing by a cheater). Personally I don't remember the work of that thing -Reducing grenades damage -Anticheat improvements -Price increasing
August 24 - 1.6.0 Last patch before Season 2. Just increasing of prices again... And cheat compensation
August 29 - ROADMAP New map for season 2, improved contracts, again reconnect feature, anticheat improvements, end game gear modding system For season 3 New tools of trade, new enemy(howler), station overhaul, QoL updates, Quests, Gadgets, Sci-Fi weapons For Season 4 map 4, new enemiesm guildm crafting 2.0, consoles support, shooting range etc.
Season 2. Era of Tharis(ratting), Forge chads, Voltaic Brute, Beating of CHeating
September 28 - Season 2 start -Tharis(rat) Island -Forge mechanic -Adding of trusted queue -Reconnect ability -Balance and Meta correction -Adjusting of loot points -Adjusting of currency weight
October 4 - 2.1.0 -Adjusting Forge materials gathering and selling -Removing Hunter Vision
October 12 - 2.2.0 -Weapon and armor pricing reducing -Increasing of armor values(higher=more armor)
December 14 - 2.6.0 -Readjusting the macthcmaking system. Separate buckets for beginners and chads-K/D matchmaking. The start of same people PvP with each other era -Adding buckets for different maps -Beating of cheat issue. Vicitm compensation -Tuning of some AI values, reducing rattler damaging
January 18 - 2.7.0 -Adjusting of healing systems(higher time of small meds using)
Season 3. Current time. Era of Wipe removing, useless hight value loot in pvp, OP MK II weapons, horrible AI
March 30 -No more wipes... -Adjusting of different quests so they will be more suitable for non wipe systems(basically adding more items to bring, more creatures to kill, decreasing spawn rates) -Free loadouts -New flying enemy - Howler -Loadout presets -Station overhaul -MK II weapons(more OP versions of old white trash) -Armor durability -Ammo cost
April 19 - 3.2.0 -Forge loot and materials overhaul(changing the way of creating different armors) -Adding Badum's final quest-Another weapon balancing, reducing the damage of MKII weapons
May 10 - 3.3.0 -Few QoL features, like increasing inventory space and quarter upgrades-Another AI changes
Now we are here
These were the most general changes. Of course, I'm sure I've missed a couple of important changes, but I think the overall message is correct. Now I would like to express my personal opinion on the whole journey.
First of all, Pre-Season and Season 1. Was the game ready for release in that time? Technically - yes, but by content filling - no. Was Season 1 successful? Probably, but that was looking like just some kind of regular update, not the big start of new game. Low amount of content, constant meta balancing and more. Overall, the launch of the game was more or less fine, if not to mention few bugs and the absence of reconnect feature. Still, the most amount of patches were released just to fix some balancing issues. The Bulldog and Bolty era, the Trenchgun and so on were all just minor problems that needed spot fixes. But for some reason developers spent a lot time on releasing such patches where they changed few number in weapon/armor, despite fact community were asking them for new content or at least for QoL updates. Probably the biggest fix was the nerfing of nade spam. Was ruined by cheaters at the end which almost killed the game.
Was it enjoyable? Yes, quite fun, because that was a new game. I also would like to mention a
ROADMAP that was presented at the end of the season. There are a lot of interesting things there to check about plans for season 3 and 4. But we will back to it later
Season 2. Personally I think that the second half of the season was ideal due to different reasons. Here finally developers have added a really new content, new map - Tharis. Was it cool? At the beginning - yes. But at the end of the day, it becomes obvious just how bad the level design of this map is. Constant camping, rats, squads who control the forge, lots of mobs, dark places and stuff. In my opinion it was a nice addition to the season itself, but I can't really call it a successful map.
Most of the problems the developers focused on this season were related to cheaters and again to balance(which again wasn't in horrible state and all problems could be fixed by few point updates). A few life improvements were also added, such as reconnecting and other smaller ones.
Was Season 2 successful? I think yes. But the problem that came from the first season is still there. Most of the developers' energy is spent on unnecessary patches to improve or strengthen weapons and armour, or reworking mobs, while again, the community is primarily asking for life improvements. Most of the resources also went to the fight against cheaters, which although it has paid off, but apparently pushed back the release of Season 3 for an extra 3 months, and also severely hampered the release of new content.
Season 3. We are here now. This season is probably the biggest in terms of the amount of content added: station redesign, weapon and armour redesign, removal of wipes, lowdowns, mk2 weapons, and other minor changes. Most of the updates in this patch were aimed at changing the artificial intelligence system for mobs, as well as various changes to weapon and armour balancing. Is this season a success? Absolutely. Yes, a lot of different features and additions have been added this season, but all of this should have been present at the beginning of the first season, when the game simply had nothing but quests and PvP. At the moment we are seeing a picture that the number and speed of updates have become much smaller for unknown reasons. Developers have added many features that no one ever asked for, such as changing the artificial intelligence or a complete redesign of the system of Vipes, which was asked only enough casual players.
ConclusionsSo it's been almost a year, let's summarize what we have seen in all this time as content and in general the quality of changes in the project. In my opinion, almost nothing and at the moment the game is in a very poor state and is almost close to death. Why? It's quite simple: starting from the first season the developers have been stomping around, releasing only balance changes in the form of changing a few numbers and reworking some minor mechanics. The biggest breakthrough was Season 3, where the developers added really many different features that players asked for, but some of them were simply unnecessary and resources could be directed in a completely different direction. While the community has been asking the developers for months to add containers for loot or currency, as well as selling directly from the backpack, they are making overhaul of the station that just no one asked for. Likewise with the artificial intelligence which was in decent condition during the first and second season. At this point, several updates have already been aimed specifically at the AI system fix.But the most global change this year has been the removal of the Wipes system, which in my opinion will kill this game in the future. But that's just my personal opinion. Instead of developing their old system, which was completely based on the existence of Wipes, the developers are deciding to abandon them and develop a system without Wipes. Although most of the game's mechanics are sharpened just to reload at the end of each season. At this point we see the situation that after completing a large chain of all the quests in the game there is simply nothing to do. Previously that was fixed just by Wiping all progress and nobody has ever complained about such things as lack of end game content. All that's left is the simple and silly PvP that all other games have. I'm not saying the lack of wipes is bad or good. I'm just saying that most of the game's systems are completely unmade for this kind of game mode.
All these chaotic and unconscious changes let us know that the developers probably simply don't know what they want and have already changed their plans for the game several times. Just look at the roadmap for seasons 3 and 4. For season 3 they were planning on adding a trading system, adding new gadgets, and sci-fi weapons. Where is it all? Exactly the same changes were planned for season 4, i.e. new weapons, new map, new enemies, and gender. But what we see in the end is the same, i.e. stomping around. Adding no one needs changes, such as artificial intelligence, further reworking them and trying to return everything as it was and the end result is simply the absence of any new content for players.
In general, in my personal opinion, the developers have done almost nothing to develop their game in a year. Most of the changes were aimed purely at changing the balance, meta and fixing bugs, while full-fledged content was added to the game only 9 months later (not counting the new map in the second season). And destroying of cheates of course. The developers also decided to remove wipes from the game without reworking most of their systems for new realities. The game does not have a new roadmap, the developers' plans for the further development of the project are unknown. Personally, I stopped believing in this game a long time ago, although I spent a lot of my time and money on it. With things going like this, there won't be a next anniversary for the game. Do you think the developers were moving in the right direction during development and will they be able to release something that will really make people return to the game and bring new users?

2023.06.01 12:20 OnforuLED Do Security Lights Use a lot of Electricity?
| The amount of electricity used by any lighting device depends on the power and time of use. For example, a 100-watt bulb used for five hours will consume 0.5-kilowatt hours, and most LED lamps use much less energy than older incandescent lamps. According to May 2022 U.S. residential electricity price data, at an average of 14.92 cents per kWh, using a 100w LED security light for 5 hours would cost $0.0746 in electricity. The main benefit of using LED outdoor floodlights is that they are more energy efficient than traditional halogen bulbs. LEDs use 90% less energy than halogen bulbs, resulting in significant savings on electricity costs. In addition to being more energy efficient, LED security lights also have a much longer life than traditional bulbs. Halogen bulbs typically last about 2,000 hours, while LEDs can last 30,000 to 50,000 hours. This means there is no need to worry about spending more time and energy on frequent replacement of lighting equipment. LED floodlights are also more durable than halogen bulbs. Onforu outdoor floodlights are shocked and drop tested to passing standards, which means they can withstand being dropped or hit by a ball without breaking, and they are not as susceptible to heat damage as halogen bulbs. Also, having an IP65+ rating for dust and water resistance makes them ideal for outdoor use, as they can withstand a variety of weather conditions. How to choose a suitable outdoor wall light for your home If there is a more energy-efficient option for outdoor lighting fixtures, it is to use motion sensor security light or dusk till dawn security light because they are turned on when needed. Normal security lights are switched on and off using a manual, and sometimes you feel guilty for forgetting to turn them off. https://preview.redd.it/c09qo3jutd3b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=0e8058cfc87a64bc7ddf2708bfd11d879c3a289b Motion sensor lights also tend not to need to be on for very long. For example, when you return home in the dark, the outside floodlight needs to be on. But once you're inside, you won't need them anymore. And don't worry about forgetting to turn off this light, because once you're in the house and no human motion is sensed, it will automatically turn off. The sensors use less energy than conventional wall sconces. You can use custom logic to determine the proper placement of the motion sensor light, and the time it is on. https://preview.redd.it/7xbo9if5ud3b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=e67e06e62cc250e1da0f459a9bcc0827e96d43af If your home needs to be lit for long periods of time at night, consider using a dusk-to-dawn security light, the light will automatically turn on at night and stay off during the daytime (10-20 Lux: ON; 30-60 Lux: OFF). You also don't have to worry about wasting unwanted electricity by forgetting to turn off the lights when you go out during the day. Using LED outdoor lights can save a range of electricity, depending on the type, size and frequency of use. Before buying and installing outdoor lighting fixtures, be sure to consider the ongoing cost of running them. In addition, installing and using motion-activated floodlights can reduce energy consumption by an average of 40-50%, and in some cases by as much as 80%. The payback period depends on the total power of the lights connected to the sensor. The higher the power of the lights, the faster the sensor will get its payback. Using dusk till dawn security lights is a great way to reduce energy costs. They consume very little power and can be of help to you. Motion sensor lights and dusk-to-dawn lights can save money every month if you or your family forgets to turn off the lights. It's also a more economical solution that can increase environmental and economic awareness. By installing Onforu energy-saving lights, you will enjoy even more convenience.
