2023.04.05 16:46 ayokg Severe Weather 4/5 Megathread

Hey y’all,
Preemptively getting this post up. If shit hits the fan, I’ll replace the crisis information one with it temporarily.
Most recently (as of 9:30am), the NashSevereWx guys tweeted that the line may be here as early as 4-5pm. Currently high winds and heavy rain seem to be the worst threat, followed by hail. There is also a tornado potential, but it is low.
Resources:
@NWSNashville
@NashSevereWx
@RuthSevereWx
Lelan Statom
Ryan Hall Y’all twitter and youtube – be aware he works with storm chasers and tends to focus on the “worst” weather happening nationwide. He may or may not hone in on Middle TN.
Great apps: StormShield, StormWatchPlus
If you are out bopping around and not working, stop in Ace Hardware, Home Depot, or Lowe’s and grab a NOAA weather radio. It seems this spring is gonna be a rough one so it would not hurt to make the investment now.
As always, stay weather aware, not scared.
Please do not rely on me to update this main message. I will as I can. I have the thread sorted by new so newest comments will be up top. Full disclosure, I'm super burned out from the last week and a half and am working on paying attention to my own needs so I may not be particularly participatory in this thread. Am a human bean too, believe it or not, and I am whooped. Cheers, stay safe.

2022.11.27 23:09 mdudz Monday 11/28 marks 1,000 days since the 2020 tornado.

With severe weather possible on Tuesday 11/29, this “anniversary” is a good reminder to make sure you’re prepared and informed.
(The team at NashSevereWx has a good blog post on the topic of preparedness.)

2022.01.19 02:48 JoshMock Please get all the ice off of your car’s roof before you drive.

I nearly had my windshield destroyed several times this morning driving on 65 between East Nashville and Brentwood, and saw other cars swerve to avoid the same fate, due to ice missiles flying off of the roofs of careless drivers’ vehicles. A lot of the culprits were big pickups with bed covers.
NashSevereWx said it best: “It will either go forward and cover your windshield or go backwards and damage the car behind you.”

2021.12.30 02:22 ayokg Exciting announcement! Upcoming [AMA] with the NashSevereWx guys. AMA will go live Tuesday, January 4th, from 8PM-9PM central.

Very excited about this and grateful for the redditor u/coasty163 who helped me get connected with them for this AMA and to the 3 guys behind NashSevereWx on Twitter who have agreed to take some time out of their busy schedules for this.
You can start asking your questions here between now and then and I will pin this post once NYE questions die down. The guys will be online answering questions at 8pm central on January 4th.
The only limitation for questions is please do not ask super personal stuff. No, they cannot meet up with you or tell you where they live. All sub rules still apply.
Not sure who I'm talking about? Our sub's favorite weather guys over at https://twitter.com/NashSevereWx
Their about them info and disclaimer can be found here: https://nashvillesevereweather.com/who-we-are/
They are not obligated to answer every question. I recommend upvoting other questions and comments in this thread that are really great and you want to make sure they definitely see!

2021.12.10 07:42 BaronIbelin I’m a new TN/Nashville resident, and the tornado threat is giving me anxiety

I’m British, and just moved my family to Fairview. I’ve never experienced a tornado before, and the prospect of one this coming weekend has me incredibly nervous for my family’s safety.
I bought a weather radio today , and I think I have it set up correctly, but I’m concerned about how unsafe I feel our house is in a strong tornado.
Our house is mostly a wooden construction, with an unfinished cinderblock “basement” as the it’s on a hillside. I’m not sure if we should shelter in an internal closet on the first floor, or head down to the basement, which is accessed by going outside, down our deck stairs and through an external door.
Is it normal to be so fearful? Does everyone just shelter for hours if an alert comes?
I’ve been googling like crazy to see what I can do to prepare, but after my searching and talking to a coworker it feels like “welp if you get hit you die, sorry”.
I’m not really sure what I’m looking for, maybe some reassurance, or additional advice on how to be fully prepared or make my house safer. Appreciate any and all comments!
Edit: I really appreciate all the responses! It definitely helps to calm my anxiety. Thank-you to all who responded; it’s good to know that my fears are normal, and that there are definitely steps we can take to be safer
Edit 2: So whilst that wasn’t a “fun” experience, our kids (2&4) did absolutely amazingly with being woken up and participating in our “basement adventure”. They loved watching NashSevereWx on YouTube with me, and a huge shoutout to those guys for everything they do. Between the Twitter updates, WKRN alerts, and our weather radio, I felt like I had a good sense of what was going on all the time.
Massive shoutout to all of you. I didn’t love the experience, but I felt calm and as prepared as I could be the whole time. Those of you with words of comfort and advice helped this Dad stay calm for his family tonight. Much love to you all.

2021.08.31 18:16 Flangebro Bonnaroo Weather Twitter Account

Those who are local to Nashville will probably be familiar with NashSevereWX a local amateur weather Twitter account who are some of the best people around.
They’ve been kind enough to put together a Bonnaroo Weather account in conjunction with Coffee County Severe Weather for people to get updates on. I’d recommend following them all for updates especially if you are traveling into the area.

2021.08.30 04:59 ayokg Prep for Ida in the morning.

Alright y'all. Looks like Ida will be making a stop in Nashville so prep accordingly.
@NWSNashville says we can start expecting heavy rain tomorrow night. The morning is a good time to bring in or tie down the same shit you would ahead of a tornado-ey/wind storm kind of day. Tuesday should be the bulk of the storms.
We should only see strong to severe thunderstorms but as always, prep your tornado safe space (most interior room with no exterior walls or windows). Helmet, flashlight, snack, water, comfort pillow, good shoes go in there.
Get your power outage shit together. Charge your things.
Should just be some storms but be sure to stay weather aware. Never really know what we are going to get when the remains of a hurricane come through and she may still be at tropical storm/tropical depression strength when she comes through. While those two levels are significantly easier to deal with this far inland, the rotatey, unstable aspect of hurricanes and their remnants are what can cause problems this far inland.
NWSNashville and NashSevereWx are great follows on Twitter to stay aware of the storm's progress and general weather updates too.
If you want to help those impacted by the worst of Ida, I highly recommend watching for pinned posts in the NewOrleans sub over the next few days. They have a great, well organized sub and should be a great hub for info in the coming days.
